Interesting stats on the Jays. Wishing Tatum’s numbers were higher. But he’s so much better than JB all around. I won’t recite all the numbers here, but go to Basketball Reference and compare the two for their careers in the categories “Per 100 Possessions” and “Advanced.” They’re in different leagues.

Has Brad Stevens possibly seen the way the new cap works that trading Brown now will mean they can poach a star next season with multi teams having to get rid of guys who won’t fit under their cap? Maybe he’s many moves ahead of other teams?

In 2024-25, RS TS% was .576 and in the playoffs was .566. In 2025-26, RS TS% was .581 and in the playoff was .562

So a couple things I want to point out here

Out of all the guys that would be considered “top 10” since All-NBA is position-less, the Jays are the only guys that put up less than 50% of games with good efficiency.

Brown is the only player that doesn’t crack 50% in the regular season or playoffs, and over 61% of his playoff games the last 2 years being less than average is not a great sign, even if most guys are 1-2 games off of 50% because of the small sample.

In 2024 he was ¹²⁄₁₉ and in 2023 he was ¹²⁄₂₀. Much better, so it’s kind of strange he’s been so mediocre the last 2 years. Maybe recency bias and a small sample, but when he’s making super max money, you can’t have that. Especially considering this is just shooting, has nothing to do with the turnovers.

The numbers say Brown is just average more than he’s great, and that was not going to cut it if our only moves were around the edges.

In terms of a Paul George flip, the most interesting names I keep coming back to are Jokic and Curry, with a somewhat piqued interest in Mobley. 2 of these teams are pushing the 2nd apron and committing $115M+ to 2 players in 2027-28 (pretty close to what Tatum and Brown would be making combined) and the Warriors have still not signed Curry in the last year of his deal and are letting Butler and Draymond expire after this season. Something is up there and I refuse to believe they’re just re-signing him and clearing up space to sign free agents this summer when the best guys available will probably be Durant declining his option and going back to Golden State, Anthony Davis declining his option and going to play with Curry, or a bunch of guys who are not a 1st or 2nd option on a contender.

Curry would be so insane, I saw some people on here floating Lauri which is less flashy obviously but don’t absolutely hate it. Curry is def top option assuming Jokic is a 0.1% chance (as is Curry Im sure) but never say never. Will be very interesting to see how it plays out. It def does look clearer and clearer like the Cs just saw JB as awesome as he was, wasn’t worth the financial bind the new CBA put them in.

My biggest issue with Markannen is we want a championship out of a big trade where we go all in, and the guy has literally 0 playoff experience. He’s a nice scorer and is efficient which matters, but if the goal is to win a championship, I really don’t want to put my eggs into a basket of unknown where a guy goes “oh, this is different” when he’s going up against more physicality. It’s the same reason no matter how good a guy is, he’s going to have to learn how to beat a team 4 times rather than 1 night and see you in a month or 2. Wembanyama, who is much more talented, had his share of playoff blunders and got exposed guarding Brunson. That’s normal for a first crack it.

But as is, he’d be a perfect 3rd option kind of like Porzingis was where you aren’t asking him to get you a consistent 20 to supplement what Tatum can do. It’s like Chet Holmgren. Perfect as the 3rd guy but 2nd option when JDub is hurt and he’s just not that type of player.

I can’t expect Markannen to get there and be ready to consistently perform for 4 series in a row. Let’s see what he looks like after the Jazz make the playoffs this year and he gets his feet wet. They are absolutely talented enough to be top 8 in the West.

Curry fits the bill of not cracking under pressure because he’s done it so many times, fills a need of a point guard that can run an offense when Tatum is out, is excellent off ball, fits Mazzulla’s scheme of 3 point volume being important, and as a 1A/1B, Tatum and Curry would be the best duo in basketball where neither would be that hurt by having an off-night with like 18 points because the other guy can put up 30. Curry’s gravity would give Tatum so many open layups, and Tatum’s gravity of being doubled on drives would give Curry the easiest looks he’s had in a while. They’d make each other more efficient, and Paul George’s money gets you 90% of the way there to salary match.

All it would take is Curry saying he wants to be traded to Boston and it’s basically a done deal. We’re the only team that can offer $56M of expiring money by the end of 2028 where the player coming back is not that good and will help them bottom out to find the next guy in the draft. The Warriors have everyone off their books by summer of 2028, they don’t want anyone long-term if Curry is out the door. And Curry has veto power. He’s not going to Denver if Jokic is the piece being traded, he’s not going to Washington to play with Trae and a rookie, he’s not going to Sacramento, the Heat aren’t trading Giannis and the Knicks aren’t trading Towns.

If Curry asks out by the deadline, I think it’s us, San Antonio (trading Fox), Houston (trading FVV) or Charlotte (trading Miller and other pieces) if Curry wants to compete for a championship or go home to Charlotte. Nobody else can really make an offer that satisfies all parties because they aren’t contenders with Curry, don’t have assets Golden State wants (picks and expiring contracts) or simply don’t have $62M to salary match without gutting their roster.

The weirdest thing about the Celtics fandom is how drastic the difference on opinion depending on what social media you use. Take for example Joe Mazzulla.

You look at IG, FB and Youtube and everybody is calling him out for his collapses and want to see him fired. A few who defend him get ratiod hard.

Meanwhile in reddit majority still love him and have faith in him. Everybody who wants him fired or calls out his shortcomings gets downvoted.

I wonder if it’s the age group? Fans that comment on FB and IG are older Cs fans while I know reddit tends to skew younger.

It’s good that there are some people defending him. Even in that most recent thread a lot of people are saying he’s got 1 more year left and getting largely upvoted.

The thing that bothers me is the runway and patience we gave Brad vs the runway and patience we’ve had with Udoka and Joe. Peopke wanted Udoka fired after half a year. Joe has accomplished more than the other 2 combined and people very quickly turned on him. People didn’t turn on Brad until much much later in his tenure

And the thing is, Brad’s career really didn’t survive many down years.

2019 was a disappointment (Kyrie year). 2021 was a disappointment (Everyone was injured). Then he quit.

To an extent. The team was kind of in disarray when both Udoka and Joe took over. Joe inherited someone else’s staff and system, with most of that staff leaving an empty bench beside him for the playoffs. Joe isn’t getting any slack for this “gap year” and exceeding expectations. He helped us get a title, which in theory should give a guy some leeway, but not him.

It was about 5 years before people started turning on Brad and it would have been much longer if he won a title. It was almost instantly after losing to the Knicks that people started turning on Joe and that was only 1 year removed from winning a title and only the 2nd year he actually was able to have an off-season to implement his own stuff and have his own coaches

It has more to do with whether or not get clicks puts pennies in your pocket.

FB is 2 digit IQ, and I can’t believe anyone still goes there.

IG is “influencer” hell, younger crowd and depends entirely on who you follow.

Real world is very different from any social media account and if you have a wide variety of friends and contacts (off the internet) it tends to skew more towards Reddit (for sports) than other places.

JUDGE NOTHING by social media. It’s garbage, can’t predict an election and tends to skew wildly from any poll or actual voting on any topic.

IG/FB/Youtube thrive on engagement. People are much more likely to click/watch/comment when the topic is “Mazzulla sucks let’s fire him” as opposed to “Mazzulla is a good coach”. That goes for basically anything.

Those platforms also cater much more to casual engagement of the team. It’s easy to say something about a coach/player/etc. if most of the audience consuming your content only watches a few games a year. If you’re posting here, you’re probably watching most of the Celtics schedule. Outside a heat of the moment reactions (like right after a game or something), anyone who posts hot takes is more likely to be countered by people citing stats or pointing out gameplay or something.
