that’s almost exactly what probably happened. A good director is such an unsung hero for making legendary broadcasts happen.

producers are the brains behind successful broadcasts. Often with lesser ambitions than being on camera (or sadly, without the physical appeal). They conceptualize, head up, lead and pace broadcasts that make them appealing from content to direction to instantaneous, on-the-spot narrative and storytelling. They’re (most of them) the real talent behind the glossy front, ie, the on-air ‘talent’. Benetti is a producer’s wet dream.

For real. These owners will spend millions upon millions trying to put a good product on the field, but they could spend a fraction of that to make your product better with the guy in the booth. I don’t understand how Reinsdorf let him go. In my opinion, a good booth guy is the most bang for your buck for your product. I might have watched the last two seasons if he was there.
Letting go of Benetti was the absolute worse move in my personal fandom’s history. Imagine being expected to watch a team losing 100 games a year without Benetti. I literally left baseball itself behind when they let him go.

I remember watching a Sox game with Stone and Benetti early in the 2020 season while I was supposed to be doing online classes for my masters. The two of them were cracking me the hell up and I got called out for not paying attention.

Sox Math was a segment that aired during White Sox games. It was a pop-up trivia game that used a sprinkling of team trivia, roster numbers, historical stats, etc. Jason Benetti actually was the one who drew up the questions and fans went to social media to give the correct answer. A typical question would look something like: (Number of White Sox World Series titles) x (Current jersey number of the shortstop) + (Home runs hit this week).
Winner of the questions usually got a shout out on air, and occasionally items from an official prize shelf. Peak Sox broadcasting right there.
Eventually they let the winners submit a video introducing the next days soxmath and I’ll say the fan base had some really funny and creative vids. I never had a Twitter but I was so tempted to make one just to play to try to get on air. I kinda forgot about that until now and now I really miss Sox math.

Generally during lost seasons I’ll drift out of watching games religiously. But now that booth has settled into Jason with Dierks/Petry it’s just a must watch. Just listening to them talk is always entertaining and soothing at the same time. Like listening to friends shoot the shit.

It was the middle of the week and the broadcast was unhinged. A fever dream. Jason Benetti’s partner in the booth that night was Bill Walton. I’ve loved Jason ever since.

I’ve attended a few with my sons to foment their love of The Game, but I refuse to subscribe to CHSN- and the Benetti situation is part of the reason why.
Baseball me was absolutely devastated by this shitty move. This hurt me more than even the LaRussa debacle which destroyed an entire rebuild generation as well as any and all fans’ trust in an historica franchise.. A-hole Reinsdorf still managed to get my occasional attention on his serial 100-loss teams entirely because of the Stone/Benetti broadcast.

I do think Steve’s among the most knowledgeable on ball, for sure. And I’d put down money on Jason, who also knows his baseball, being the smartest overall. His knowledge on history and pop culture and other sports and music and really anything that comes up always seems limitless.
