Tyrese Haliburton says he’s confused how people poorer than him are flying private when it’s expensive even for him, even though he’s currently on a $244 million contract with the Pacers. [Boardroom]
At least we know he won’t be on a podcast in 10 years claiming $100 million isn’t really a lot of money.
This a shot at Melo 😂
And OBJ
And Le’Veon Bell
Ah yes, OBron James.
OBron James?
O’dell Beckham Jr
Ole’ Brandon Jennings? OB Joppin? You can’t just go initializing your favourite random player my dude
Really? When did that happen?
To be fair.. Lala took 60%
Really? I thought folks were talking about that CJ Mccollum interview everytime this got referencd.
honestly, theres a dozen athletes that said that in the past couple years, probably five this summer alone lol
Only if he’s the first guy you thought of. It’s a broadside
Funny you say that bc I brought an appearance opportunity to Melo last year and was told he only flies private
Melo makes more than him
But Carmelo didn’t blow his money. 🤷🏻♂️
Yo fuck Carmelo kirkuinely
Typically financially sound people talk about money as if they’re poor. Buying something unreasonable for a couple thousand dollars to them is a massive waste of money. It’s not necessarily he’s probably spending his money, He just sounds like he thinks about money the right way.
I know several folks who make between \(400-\)600K a year, not counting bonuses, etc. ALL of them agree that flying first class to anywhere is outrageously expensive, a complete waste of money, and that they would never do it (outside of someone else paying for it); yet, we all see those seats filled up all the time with non-corporate folk (meaning people who are paying for those seats out of pocket). I mean, how? Who? Why? lol
I used to get them often using points. If your work allows you to use your own travel credit card then you start to really rack up points for first class. I don’t think that many actually pay the prices they’re charging.
Also, good travel agents can get you those seats for a fraction of the advertised price.
[deleted]
First-class seats are often:
Bought by businesses for corporate executives (and even middle management in many companies)
Frequent flyer upgrades - this is the route the results in these seats nearly always being filled
Bought with rewards points - has some overlap with #2 above, but there’s program-agnostic cards like Chase Sapphire that get used a lot
I don’t know enough to give percentages or anything, but nearly every person I know that have or do fly first class have never purchased a first-class ticket outright.
You forgot airline personnel as well. They get to fly on it if there are seats available
A lot of big companies will fly their regular employees first/business class, too, under some policies. Usually it’s something like if the longest actual flight on the trip is over 9 hours or something along those lines. Some employees game those policies and pick longer flights just to get those seats.
Damn, when I was Middle Management they made me fly Sydney–>LA economy. When I flew with the owner,CEO etc they were nice enough to get me 1st or Upper class. Huge difference if you are going directly to a bunch of meetings.
There are also free upgrades. I had to fly a bunch for work for a few years, and during that time my wife and I were getting free first class upgrades every other personal trip.
I got “first class” on a regional jet.
At least there was free alcohol.
I had to do a 5 flights trip, my home country wasnt very easy to get into, so i had to do this convoluted way to have a way to get in, anyways i bought my tickets 7 months before it happened, they were 100% refundable and you had up to 1 year to change the original date, so if you were flying the first of january you could change your flight for the next first of january at no additional cost, the only thing that changed was the cost of the seat itself, so you could change to a “cheaper” flight on a different date and since you “paid” more for your seat, you could upgrade to better seats, i didnt know this existed.
My home country was having diplomatic issues so it was really hard to get my papers to get in, i had to go to the country i was staying at for help, and basically they were gonna help me get out and get inside my homecountry, but bureaucratic shit is alwalys slow, so i had to check my flight every single day to move it to another day until the papers were done, long story short i noticed that the flights were getting cheaper, and i chose 1 day that was noticeable cheaper, switched to that day, and was able to get an upgrade to the 2nd highest tier of what they offer at no additional cost :D.
I know flying in the USA is a nightmare and super expensive compared to other places, like for example the drinks and food are always free in south america, the bags are also included in the ticket on most offers, so the only difference is priority to get in, better seats and more room, and bigger bags allowed.
I think it’s pretty rare these days. The upgrade at least. It used to be way more common, now they are trying to squeeze people for more money instead of treating loyal customers well…
Do you ask about that or are they just offering? I’ve never had an upgrade but the planes I’m on usually look pretty full
So, I don’t know how or why this happened but two weeks ago my boss and I had to fly from Boston to Chicago. For some reason the first class was priced the same as economy. We had several other people look at it before we paid for them, because it just didn’t seem right. I don’t work in the airlines so I have no idea why that would have happened but it sure was nice
Yeah, my boss was offered the upgrade to 1st for $40 the one time I had to fly with him. It was a no-brainer at that price.
I’ve had it happen once. It was the last time I flew first class. It was a short flight (Chicago to JFK).
That has happened twice in my life as well and oddly enough, both times I was going to Indiana. My parents were booking flights and saw it was like less than a hundred bucks difference to fly first class so they just booked them ASAP. The first time I flew first class, I fell asleep early in to the flight and missed all the amenities, hahahaha. I was so bummed!
That second trip though… I enjoyed the real food they give you, the beer, the hot towel, the space. What a ride, baby,
Last month I went from Orlando to Chicago, bought an AA ticket with no checked in bags.
The upgrade to first class was cheaper than buying checked bags for me and my GF, and first class tickets come with 2 free checked in bags per passenger.
Alot of companies do surge pricing. Alot of interest for a certain product? It gets more expensive, sometimes even more expensive than the higher quality product, because it has less interest.
Belive it or not, earlier this year I flew from Washington DC to Italy and first class was CHEAPER than economy. I would love to find a deal like that again
There’s a distinction to be made between first and business class, for those so aren’t familiar.
Business class (lie flat, better food, more space) on long haul is usually 3-6x the cost of economy.
First class (walls and bed) can be 20x (though I don’t look at those prices much).
Paying out of pocket for business class is a pretty reasonable value proposition considering you get much better rest and can work a lot more comfortably.
Also a massive difference between domestic and short-haul international vs long-haul international.
A lot of people on this thread talking about flying first class on a 2-4hr domestic flight are getting free drinks, upgraded food, and a marginally better seat.
It’s the long-haul flights with the business class lie flats (or suite style first class cabins) that are the true step up, and you’re right, the cost there is much more.
yep! I’ve been able to fly business class even when I just had the manager title.
Every well-off person I know springs for business class on International flights, and honestly if you can afford it, it’s usually well worth it. But even the crazy rich ones won’t pay for first class. It’s unnecessary and absurdly expensive on long-haul flights.
Jesus Christ. 20x?
I know a 65-67 year old lady with a bad back on a relatively decent retirement annuity but not outrageously wealthy, just comfortable with the house paid off and the kids long out of the house who generally upgrades to business.
As she says “what else am I going to pay for?”, it’s trips to holidays or trips to the pain clinic, in her monthly calendar, lol.
How about pay for someone in need lol
Haha if you look into the economics of flights, first class is literally how airplanes make their margin. They basically breakeven-ish on economy.
And that’s why airlines rely on selling checked bags, nickel and diming you on food, etc.
One time my wife and I upgraded to first class from CLT to Orlando cause it was only a $50 upgrade lol
But that’s like an hour and a half flight lol
What did you get for that $50 during the hour long flight?
My wife and I make about $450k. Neither of us have ever flown first class. No idea how anyone ever pays for it (I assume most people are there from upgrades).
I recently flew first class for the first time in my life because the normal flight was already \(600 before checked bag fees and the first class upgrade was only \)200 for a 6hr flight. I imagine it’s mostly people like that
Do you travel? If you don’t, then your anecdote is kinda meaningless. If you do, then not all flights are ultra expensive. As an example, I found Chicago to LA round trip for $900, direct, FC.
That income is more than enough to splurge for something. If you can’t spend 3k on a planned flight with months of planning, and you make 450k a year, you’re doing something insanely wrong.
This is because you don’t know their lifestyle. You and your wife may have a home you’re paying for, car notes, kids, student loans, family you take care of, etc. If I have no outrageous debts, am single, have low-cost hobbies, and one of my few treats is flying first class, I could make half of that and still enjoy it worry-free.
I’m with you. My wife and I are around 500K from our W2 jobs and I have never even flown business class. I grew up really poor so the thought of spending thousands for a bit more comfort is not worth it. If I had points, I would use it to book both a cheaper flight and a hotel instead lol.
I’ve never flown first class, but my wife and flying business on JAL from LA to Tokyo next year through our CC points. I think rewards travel has gotten pretty popular with all these travel influencers and stuff, so I’m sure lots of people do it that way. We had enough points for first class each, but it’s just much harder with 2 people since they only release 1 first class seating per flight for rewards booking on JAL IIRC
A lot of carriers don’t even have a separate first class anymore. That’s actually been pretty good for us normal-rich people because typically the business class product is nicer when there’s no first
Wife and I are also doing alright and we have only flown 1st class once…and it was only because it was an almost empty flight from CLT to DCA on Xmas night and they just put everybody in 1st class lol
Gotta use the points to get those kind of flights. I run a business with maybe 250k to 300k of spend per year. Combined with constantly getting new cards for points bonuses I have points on top of points.
Most people in that income range I know use points/rewards for business class. None pay for first class because the multiple compared to business class is too high.
I would always fly first class if my salary were in that range. I’m a half foot taller and 70 lbs heavier than what plane seats are designed for.
First class is absolutely worth it. More room and comfort on a long flight? Idgaf about any of the other perks.
These people are crazy man, they want to die wealthy for some reason like fuckin Smaug. Just get the upgrade.
I’ve flown 12-14 hour flight in economy with no issue.
Points. (Hopefully)
It’s a religion for my wife and I to use the credit card anywhere we can to collect points. She also travels for business and accumulates points that way as well.
When we go on international flights we’ll buy premium economy seats w points or a combo of points and cash, then use the e upgrade credits to see if we can get bumped up to business class.
Flying to Japan and Taiwan this week and we used a combo of points and cash to get business class through the whole leg. Tickets that would have cost \(16,000 ended up costing about \)1400 each.
The system the airlines use is intentionally complex but my wife was a consultant so she knows the system inside and out.
Upgrades probably.
I have an uncle who is in that income range and his job requires him to fly around the world constantly and his company just reimburses him so he ends up with a ton of miles and gets upgraded on pretty much any flight with an empty seat now.
I have flown domestic first class a few times with point redemptions. I assume most of the people flying first class domestic are using a branded credit card, a points redemption or a status reward/upgrade.
The one time I flew business class international was also a points redemption. It was 270000 points for a 3hr flight + 15 hr flight for two people that would have cost \(30k if I paid cash. I think normal economy was like \)800-900/person. The people I saw in business class were either rich Russians or business travelers likely getting the flight paid for by their company.
I flew to Hawaii and they had those super nice seats for the first class. One lady was talking to us while we were waiting to get to our seat and she said she was flying first class because it was her dream trip and she had saved up for it. So it made sense in that regard.
Hey I make that much and fly first class everyone. When youre 6’4” 270 you buy first class.
You don’t have to justify yourself to the poors and hobbits.
First class on 2 hour flight within Europe meant an guaranteed empty seat in the middle. Not gonna lie: It was pretty sweet not having to fight over the armrests.
tbf, first class for long distance flight is definitely worth it if you have the money.
Earn a shit ton of miles through bonuses and rewards programs. Fly shitty on domestic and save points for big trips. International first class is a fucking game changer lol
The number of people flying first class on credit cards “just to flex because I deserve it. I am a king/queen is probably disgustingly close to the people who just pay out of pocket because they can actually afford it.
Paying for it once for a vacation you do every 10 years for some people vs the $400k guys 15th flight of the year makes a difference there too.
thats about what my wife and i make a year and we don’t fly first class. only flying business class next year with points. I think that amount of money used to be worth a lot more too.
First class is definitely worth it sometimes, but not often. Namely, it can sometimes be worth it on longer flights where you’d like to sleep (such as international red eyes). The other thing I’ve done sometimes is using points (or card rewards/credits) to upgrade. That’s technically money I could’ve used on a different flight, but with how infrequently I fly, it does feel worth it sometimes.
I think it probably also depends on the physical build of the person. I’m a decently large man, and I’m at the point where I always pay for the upgraded leg room seats (like exit rows or economy plus) on any flight > 2 hours for comfort. I could definitely see someone who was really large (or broad) feeling first class was worth it on long flights.
A lot of folks get upgraded due to airline status or upgrade via points/miles or are just flying for work (my company has a policy that says employees fly economy for domestic but business for flights more than 5+ hours, and thats for us plebs. I know execs that only get booked first class as part of their work agreements).
The only times I get to fly first are when I’m flying on points. The other way it happens is if you fly all the time. If you get to a certain status with the carrier they’ll bump you to first if first isn’t filled.
I used to get upgraded all the time with my accumulated milage. One time I got upgraded on a 20 seat prop plane where all the seats were the same. Not even a curtain to separate me from the masses. I did get a free drink though!
Not sure how it is today, but when I had a 75% travel job, first class got significantly more affordable when my frequent flyer status leveled up. Also automatic upgrades for unsold seats.
Gotta get in on credit card points redemptions brother
a lot of people get upgraded because they fly all the time. I knew a sr manager at one role I had where he flew almost every week and almost always in business or first class.
for my current role, any flights over 4 hours you can pay for business class. I’m a Director, so not quite an executive and I also don’t dress very corporate, so people would probably assume I am non-corporate.
Even when I was a manager, some companies have a policy that travel over so many hours you can buy a business class or first class ticket.
I’ve only paid for first class once but it was on a smaller plane. It was only a $150 upgrade and essentially was just a nicer and wider seat, at the front and with real food. It wasnt the lay down seats or some fancy dinner and the flight was only 2 hours.
but I’d agree, it’s expensive even if you’re making that much. \(600k puts you at \)50k a month, so maybe \(30-35k after taxes. if you have a family of 4, business or first class is going to cost a minimum of \)10k per flight but possibly $20-35k depending on where you’re going.
I’ll be flying first class in a couple weeks.
A friend is fronting my tickets.
He’s got HELLA airline miles because he travels due to work (work pays for his travel)
How do you know they’re not corporate? I look like a bum but fly first class on the company dime every time I fly. In my experience 90% of the first class fliers are typically corporate travelers and a couple % are on points. So very few are flying first class out of pocket.
ALL of them agree that flying first class to anywhere is outrageously expensive, a complete waste of money, and that they would never do it (outside of someone else paying for it);
It’s kind of how I see it too. At the end of the day, no matter if you’re in first class, economy comfort, or economy, everyone is getting to the same destination.
Lately, I’ve been choosing the last two or three rows of a plane because the de-planing process from the back is a much more relaxed experience. No one is in a hurry to leave because we all have the understanding that we’ll be the last ones off the plane no matter what.
I’m in that group. I make 7 figures annually.
The only time I travel first class or business is when my company is paying for it or I am using points on it (points I have racked up due to company paying me back for company expenses I have). The points redemptions are for 8 hour+ long flights too, not domestic travel.
I could never and would never buy first class otherwise. I always fly economy. Paying cash for business seems like a waste of money.
Whenever I fly business/first-class, it’s mostly people who’s companies or points are paying for it tbh … the occasional time, it is the “influencer” types or people who want to show off to their friends but rarely.
Idk, if I made that kind of money, I’d definitely pay for a seat upgrade at the bare minimum. If the flight was longer than 2 hours, I’d find the money for 1st class. I can see where they are coming from if they fly somewhere once a month or more though.
But I despise flying, so I always want to make it as comfortable as possible for myself.
eh I know a dude who makes less than that and he flies “business” all the time, he will make a point of informing you that first class doesn’t really exist anymore (at least for domestic flights). For him, same reason he goes to expensive concerts for musicians he doesn’t actually seem to like that much. Just a flex
“ALL of them agree that flying first class to anywhere is outrageously expensive”
It’s funny to see this because my experience is the exact opposite. Most of my peers are in this financial bracket and the one thing they will splurge on is first class for any flights longer than 3 hours or so because flying is so fucking miserable.
Its insane, but for overseas, id consider buying seats that go flat or nearly to let me sleep. Flew economy recently because of a mix up with my travel portal. Never again, my wife and I got stuck next to someone who’s never showered and we could barely recline.
We’re a doc+NP household, and we travel once a year, though.
I fly a lot for work. My firm requires that I include in my contracts that flights will be first class where available to allow me to work while flying. I use the points to get first class flights when flying with my wife and kids.
I would never pay the prices but did get a trans-Atlantic business class by telling them it was my honeymoon. It was actually my honeymoon but they don’t ask for any verification. There’s no reason every trip with my wife can’t be a honeymoon.
International never and maybe not even in big cross country flights but like Hub to Outstaion regional jet “first class” is usually not unreasonable when you factor in the free bags. Im not a huge dude but im 6’1” 220lbs and economy seats can be a squeeze.
a complete waste of money
I take issue with this - if you’re flying long-haul overseas, business class is ABSOLUTELY worth the price if it’s a special trip
At 400k that’s a good chunk of your bring home if you flew three times a year. At 44 million a year, it’s not nearly as much tho
But they still fly in business class so same same but different.
Why? I’m 6’4”, so if I’m in coach and the person in front of me decides to recline he’s basically lying in my lap. I’ll suck it up and fly coach if the flight is a couple of hours or shorter, but for a long flight I’ll spring for first class. Unless I can get an exit row or bulkhead seat.
I have a couple decades of airline miles from periodic work travel. I had never used them. So now I use them to upgrade to some extra leg room in first class on cross-country (US) flights. No way I would pay the asking price.
Tbf I’ve flown first class before on a significantly smaller salary and it was about maybe $50 more expensive than a coach seat (I used points).
I’m in that boat, give or take, and I agree. Especially for US domestic, paying for first class or even economy plus seems a waste of money for what you get. Give me a free upgrade, or i’ll be hanging in the back and getting there within a few minutes of you all in the front of the plane
I mean, how? Who? Why? lol
As long as you’re not a jerk about it, you can often ask if theres free upgrades available. It’s a 50⁄50 shot, but if your’e generally pleasant at check in, most people have no issue upgrading you.
My ex bought first class tickets every single time. Her checking account was in the 10s….
Yeah my dad wouldn’t do it for us flying cross country and he could have afforded it. Now I would do it because economy seats have shrunk.
If you are making 500K+ and you are not flying first class, than wtf is wrong with you?
Like what is the point of money if not to fucking fly first class jfc.
I get being frugal but holy shit. You make 500K. Fly first class.
I’m smack dab in the middle of that figure and I feel like it’s a treat to myself just to be in Comfort+. Paying $1000+ for domestic first class is fucking theft.
Edit: Only times I’ve flown first are when last minute upgrades are < $50 per hour of flight time. Pops up occasionally.
you’re forgetting points. People rack up points saving for 10+ years in some cases for a single epic vacation.
Or if you travel once every decade, paying $4,000 for first class isn’t as egregious
Bid upgrades, free upgrades, e-upgrades, point redemption and just plain lucky planning.
Ding ding ding
If I made 400k a year this is one of the things I would absolutely do all the time haha granted I fly like 4-5 times a year. Oh and no kids.
i know a guy who makes double that on investments. he flies coach and waits for upgrades because he’s at 50k on his airline. also shops around to save $5 on meat prices
I own my own business and do well. I’ll splurge on first class or business class for an international flight because it’s miserable to be in coach that long. But domestic, a quick flight, definitely doing coach.
Airline employees and their families often get first class seats too. When no one buys them, they become available for upgrades and after that, airline employees often fly standby and can get first class seats. My dad worked for the airlines, we were thoroughly middle class but I’ve flown first class probably 50+ times.
Their work is paying for the seats and free upgrades.
I’ve flown first class twice. It just happened that, for some unknowable fucking reason, the first class tickets were cheaper than coach both times!
Credit card points. My buddy flys business to Japan from California once a year for vacation and uses credit card points to do it.
Sometimes you just get lucky, I flew first class because some girl who was in first class didn’t wanna leave her friend in coach
I believe you but if you’re flying domestically, a lot of times it’s not that much more expensive. For example I just flew San Diego to Seattle first class on Delta and the upgrade only cost me like \(50. I mean sure that’s like 1/4 of the original ticket price, but I have no qualms forking over an extra \)50 in order to feel comfortable during the flight and I’m not rich by any measure.
Also some people use airlines points to upgrade. A friend of mine is a camera man for ESPN and Fox, and works NFL, NBA and NHL games, and even though the networks don’t pay for first class, he’s allowed to keep all of his airline miles/points, and he’s racked up over a million miles. He basically has free seat upgrades for life.
I have flown first class a few times. Usually points, but also when you are buying the seat in economy they give the add on option of first class. Often, first class upgrade from economy is cheaper than buying first class outright.
It’s pretty easy using credit card points
Upgrades. If you have status you can go on the upgrade list and if there are empty first/business class seats when it’s boarding time you get one.
The people working for the airlines also fill those seats up when they aren’t sold.
Business travel is still the answer. I racked up a ton of miles flying international for my job back before COVID. Banked a ton of miles and airline status. The miles helped me get free tickets for vacations. The status helped me get free upgrades to first class for vacations (as well as business travel). Aside from that, I don’t know how you confidently identify if someone’s sitting up there for business travel vs. leisure. I mean, some folks are obvious. Got their laptop and shit out, dressed up, workaholics. A lot of normal business travel people (myself included) just fly like normal-ass people. Not like I gotta dress business casual just to fly for 3.5 hours, pick up a rental, and take my ass to a hotel for the night and I sure as shit ain’t working on anything if I don’t have to. I’m going to watch a movie or play my game boy or whatever.
Sorry but at that level of income, flying first class is a luxury that’s worth it. Have you flown economy recently? Unless you’re 5 feet tall it’s just instant knee pain.
Now if it’s a short flight fair enough. But anything over 4 hours? Shit money CAN buy happiness.
Before I retired I made between \(1M-\)3M a year, and I didn’t fly first class (yes I flew business class for work trips, but economy for family/personal).
I think flying first class doesn’t really make sense unless you have enough money to cover all your other luxury needs.
In my case I wanted to save 8 figures and retire early (which I did 2 years ago) so flying first never made sense to me, but if I was making 10x what I made, and had 9 figures saved instead of 8, I might fly 1st class.
He isn’t talking about flying first class….
Well, it’s a good thing I was replying to someone else and not talking directly about Haliburton…
Lebron is still on Free version of Spotify. He might be a little too frugal.
LeBron is so cheap/frugal that he signed in Philly to get back to the East Coast so that the StreamEast website could work again. He got tired of paying for NBATV.com
Lebron so cheap, he heard KFC was “finger lickin’ good” so he goes there and licks other people’s fingers.
Pandora finally gave LeBron a free premium membership when it came out that the Heat were hearing ads when LBJ controlled the weight room music.
Every bottle of that expensive wine lengthens his career by another season so it’s worth it.
There’s nuances in everything. Read the room, your audience is poor people, saying $100 million isn’t a lot of money isn’t necessary to convey you don’t like to waste your hard earned money.
What do you mean by “financially sound?”
Typically financially sound people talk about money as if they’re poor.
Where did you get this idea?
It’s nice how grounded he is at least about this, despite making way more than we can imagine. I hope I read in the future how he didn’t go broke and made smart investments or saved a ton. It would be refreshing to see
He was still looking into flying private, because he’s willing to blow extra to do so. Just got surprised by what that number was. I’m sure you are right, he’s probably just more fiscal. See if that last’s over the next 5 years. Someone remind the schedule bot to check what he’s been flying on after 5 years.
The richest guy I ever personally knew lived in a trailer and ate a bologna sandwich every day for lunch with one piece of bologna.
https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/tyrese-haliburton-talks-sponsorship-deal-095417460.html
Exactly, never assume these guys are living like misers even if they say they are. He’s probably just not burning through his money, but he’s definitely spending some of it.
Wealthy people don’t DoorDash fast food, a ton of people in apartments do though
He definitely knows what taxes are, too
I mean he does also say that he flew private to this interview lol. Sounds like he still flies private all the time
Sounds like he’s saying it’s a luxury that he only splurges on when necessary rather than doing it all the time.
Yeah if your rich rich, private is a huge time saver. Being able to leave whenever and get a direct flight from a non air hub to whatever airport you want and you skip security.
How much money is half a day of travel worth when your getting paid 40m/year.
I mean they get paid the same amount no matter how slow they travel.
EDIT: With the exception of having to make a meeting that is un-makeable with commercial flights
Or he got the interview offer at the last minute and it just made sense for him to go private
When is a luxury ever necessary? Isn’t that the point of it being a luxury?
That’s all relative, what can be a luxury to us is necessary to other people. Running water is a luxury.
There could be times when there isn’t an easy way to get there otherwise. Poor people just wouldn’t be able to go, but he can opt for the luxury option. Like imagine if you want to rent a car and they’re all out of Hondas for \(50 per day but they still have a Porsche for \)1000 per day.
Water is a luxury. Not everyone can afford $100k water.
https://youtu.be/rg3Mr6e1KMo?si=2NJvHbjmqPMSkpWI
It was necessary to fly private for this podcast appearance?
That doesn’t mean he’s paying for it
It sounds like he really thinks about his income and expenses and makes intelligent decisions about what he can afford.
I kind of sympathize with private jets to a point. If you’re a big enough celebrity, then even first class is still going to put you in a situation where you’re likely to be bothered or your safety is put at risk (especially athletes in this current gambling/ polymarket landscape).
That said, I wish these fools would just carpool in their PJs with each other to make it less of a drain on the environment.
I once literally traded seats with Grant Hill so he could sit with his daughter. No one bothered him at all lol. To be fair, it was a few years after he retired and moved to broadcasting, but still that is Grant Fucking Hill. It felt like I was the only person on the plane that knew who he was!
After taxes it’s like $50m! You can hardly live off that dude!
Ironically a guy who is able to look at something and say it’s too expensive for him should feel like \(100 million is less than what a guy who thinks he can afford it would think. It's just to book private flights and say \)100 isn’t a lot of money both take certain levels of delusion
Big props on him for calling up his advisor asking about it. Hopefully, his advisor isn’t a piece of shit and swindling his money on the side.
I mean in the grand scheme of things it’s not. In the eyes of the truly wealthy, melo may as well be gutter trash. We just don’t like to hear it because it puts into perspective how worthless we truly are to thw too 1%
“Yeah we make a lot. But we also spend a lot.” taps temple
Flying private is tens of thousands. I knew someone who used to fly private to cabo from minnesota and it was 50k one way for a small plane. She is a billionaire. And that was before this iran mess.
but will he be in ads promoting gambling
Not in the “because I went broke sense” but it’ll be in the “you can’t turn the thermostat below 80 degrees” dad sense for his kids.
But but tax!

A lot of athletes are really, really bad at managing their money
People who were bad at managing money with no money are usually still bad at it once they get some
50⁄50. NBA money is different. Suddenly every girl wants to fuck you, every family member wants to be close to you, and friends you haven’t seen in years suddenly are talking to you again. Everyone knows your net worth and your salary is public info.
Very few people can handle that type of pressure and even in a way guilt. Because nowadays most nba players that go broke is not because of bad management but because of people around them taking advantage of the situation and stealing money from them. Are they dumb? Yeah. But it’s still a bit more complex than just “can’t manage money”
I think this is applicable to anybody who comes into a large sum of money. Suddenly you’re popular and everybody needs you in their life. If they weren’t in your life when you were a broke pos then don’t let them in once the money comes.
I mean, very few people would know what to do with that amount of money. Just look at how many Powerball or other lottery winners end up broke. It’s a lot of them!
There’s a little more to it than just setting a percentage on your 401k and forgetting it exists, and lots of people have trouble even doing that.
Still think the scenario applies albeit in a slightly different way. The public doesn’t know about it but friends, family, and other acquaintances defintely, do and that same amount of pressure to “help out” applies.
So the whole 70% of lottery winners go broke is actually an unverified urban legend. There was a dive into this on the If Books Could Kill podcast where they went over the Rich Dad Poor Dad Guy.
It falls into that category of making others feel better when someone gets a lot of money that “didn’t earn it”. Not saying it doesn’t happen but it’s not as common as people think.
A lot of those result in suicide too, depressing lot in life hitting the jackpot
It’s like winning the lotto but you actually did something
Insert yung Snuggie post from back in the day
Uhhh. Giving away your money to moochers is still “being bad with money”
Friends you haven’t seen in years
For these guys getting drafted that means some dude from elementary school
Because nowadays most nba players that go broke is not because of bad management but because of people around them taking advantage of the situation and stealing money from them.
Not being able to say to “no” to the people asking for handouts IS bad management, though.
There’s another layer even deeper than that. There’s no way to get to the NBA without tons of help. Coaches, teachers, neighbors, family, many of whom probably struggle for money at times. You have all these people who helped you achieve your dream and they all need some help. I’m sure it’s easy to get overzealous helping people out even for the right reasons.
> Because nowadays most nba players that go broke is not because of bad management but because of people around them taking advantage of the situation and stealing money from them.
That is bad money management though. If you want to provide for those close to you, you make a plan for it. You decide how much you’re willing to give away. Even if they want to call it a loan, you never consider it one so that once it’s gone you understand you’re never seeing it again.
It really is that simple and straightforward. No one is owed any of your money. It’s up to you to figure out how generous you want to be. And if you end up giving all of it away, that’s your own decision. But to come out and act like you didn’t bungle generational wealth like most of those idiots do, is just silly.
Nah giving money to Joe who was your best friend in Kindergarten because you’d feel bad saying no, is just bad at managing money. You hire someone well respected to handle your money and tell everyone no.
I’ll never win the lottery because:
The odds are so impossible low
It’s not something I waste money on anyways
But if I ever did, I’d do everything I can to make sure I collected my winning anonymously and kept it hidden from everyone outside of my immediate household.
That’s why you put a batch away and use a SET amount of money for charitable causes including helping family/friends.
Once that’s gone, it’s gone. And of course the rest is for emergencies etc
Is there data on this? Because the more likely answer in my mind is people with little to no financial education are prone to burning any amount of money at a high rate.
Not dumb, just uneducated. Easy to fix, but who really wants to put in the work to be educated?
If you grow up in an environment where you’re spending money as quickly as you make it because you have to (pay rent, food, utilities, etc…), you keep doing that because that’s what’s familiar to you.
I think the best advice to give these guys is take 5-7 million (if they have that big of a bag) and park it in safe investments like bonds. Spend the rest how you want, but never ever ever touch that 5-7. Worst-case scenario, you live off around 200k per year. I have no sympathy for athletes going broke once your rich you have to try to go broke everything in the system benefits you.
bad at managing money with no money
More so, not capable of learning how to manage money because it is constantly being used to survive and stay a float.
These issues are usually due more to external factors than internal factors.
BINGO! Could I use more? Absolutely, but I’m managing what I have appropriately.
My mom could have \(1 million or \)1 and she’d be in trouble either way. I love her but I learned what not to do by watching her vs what to do.
Same with generosity. People with no money tend to think “I’ll be generous when I get more money”, but they aren’t.
Not just bad with money. I think there was a post about a lot of NBA players lose their money to their ex-wives. So getting into relationships with the wrong people also hurt them financially.
PJ Tucker had shoes with diamonds on them, he said something about the diamonds falling off.
It’s nearly impossible to learn to manage money when you don’t have any and all of it has to go out to pay for SOMETHING. When you learn everything that comes in has to go out because of your lived experiences… then surprise surprise that just becomes a huge problem when you finally have “enough”.
This comment brought to you by someone who has never struggled or known someone that has.
You are so successful because of your own efforts!
Everyone here criticizes a certain person for a Million dollar loan from his father and everyone says they can do the same. No they cannot. Most people are extremely stupid when it comes to Finances it’s amazing.
lol they criticize him for a hell of a lot more than that, also it’s a lie anyway
Tends to happen when being a professional athlete is their first ever job. A number of these guys are not working jobs in high school or college, they really don’t know the value of a dollar.
Feels like every teenager kind of gets that reality check when they get that first actual check, these guys skipped that fun lesson.
Those jobs wouldn’t have helped. You take a current high school or college worker and give them 30 million at age 19, they would still be super irresponsible with the money. Plus, there’s grown adults who been working their whole lives but still blow through their money after winning the lottery.
Plus, there’s grown adults who been working their whole lives but still blow through their money after winning the lottery.
There’s people who were millionaires before winning the lottery, and still blew through their money. That Jack dude from West Virginia was already rich as fuck. But his entire life went to shit after winning a couple hundred million.
i can’t be the money then its the fame with having the money, he was worth like 20mil already and another 100mil doesn’t really change your lifestyle, nothing he couldn’t buy before he could buy now
And now with NIL, these guys are getting paid millions right out of high school. So they are conditioned to think the money will always be there.
You’re giving millions to a teenager. Where are they supposed to get the wherewithal to manage it? You’re given it before you can understand its value or, even more spiritual, your value.
Every year the NBA holds financial courses and meetings with rookies and bring in old players who went broke to explain their mistakes so this very thing won’t be as common as it used to. If you’re given all the tools and still can’t figure it out then you’re just a fucking idiot who just happens to be good at putting a ball in a circle.
People make all sorts of excuses for others, especially athletes, sometimes the simplest answer is some are just stupid and not good with their money lol.
Like every time contract talks come up people blame agents. Is it the agent sometimes? Sure. But most of the time it’s almost certainly the players
You need life experience to go along with those courses and war stories. You feel most invincible with youth on your side. The difference between growing up in a family with financial literacy and building that skill set yourself is a dramatic learning curve. Bad money habits is most of American culture due to capitalism.
Ah yes, we all were listening to our teachers/elders/advisors when we were 18 - 20 years old. lol.
I was making 87/hr back in 2007 at 17 years old. I had the nicest clothes and teh best concert tickets and I dind’t save a single dime of it. Also totally fucked me on my FAFSA application.
It’s hard to manage money when you’re responsible for providing for multiple households. That’s what gets athletes in financial trouble. If you’re only providing your own household, managing that kind of money is hard to screw up.
I’ve got a spreadsheet at home that maps this out (Accountant and often bored) somewhat.
Say you win £100m and invest that, and can get a spendable £4m a year after taxes, inflation, management fees etc.
Give say 20 friends/family an average of £4k a month, which is a comfortable middle class life here. Thats about 25% gone. Double that for a HCOL area and you’re looking at half gone.
If you’re an NBA player wanting to support 20 people in a HCOL area, you would probably blow past spending half your net pay on that alone if you’re anything less than a superstar, and thats with a career thats at best going to pay like that for 5-10 years.
Young men in general. Just drive around military bases and see muscle cars, off-roaders, payday loan sharks, pawn shops, etc.
And young multimillionaires in any industry just can’t comprehend how long life is and how hard it is to actually earn money. It’s universal. Even the Royal house of Saud blows money, they’re hardly young.
Enlisted parking lot: mustang, mustang, lifted truck, Camaro, mustang
Officer parking lot: camry, Honda civic, camry
Depends. I’ve seen an officer with a G Wagon.
Yeah, not speaking in absolutes, plenty of enlisted with affordable vehicles too, but in generalities it holds
it’s almost all people ever.
most people are bad at managing money.
part of it is because every damn company wants your money and is willing to lie and scam.
a lot of financial advisors working for corporations are just trying to get you into high-fee financial products and services.
even jp morgan was sued for that.
https://news.bloomberglaw.com/banking-law/jpmorgan-admits-it-didnt-tell-clients-about-conflicts
Most people bad with money aren’t going near a financial advisor. Unreal amount of people just put debt on credit cards and live life paying high interest debt/minimum payments on the card.
They just assume that’s how people are supposed to live lol
Because alot of them passed school because of the basketball, and i dont blame them 18 year old kid being handed millions with no proper support around them, and with yes man and leeches all the money in the world wont be enough…
put pressure on themselves to show off even if they’re hanging out with people who make more than them. And as he’s talking about here it’s not just buying one nice car and calling it a day, it’s the pressure to post about flying private and all this ridiculous stuff.
other athletes try and do way too much for the people they love, which is a little more noble but just as dumb. I saw one interview where an athlete was talking about having to buy multiple houses and making sure everyone in his family had enough to retire and it’s like….dude if everyone youve known since childhood needs 5 million of course you don’t have any for yourself, and no one is going to feel bad if you choose to spend it that way
TIL I’m an athlete 💪🏾
Even normal people value money differently.
2 people with the exact same income can go to a casino. One could lose 20 bucks and feel bad. Another could lose 200 and not care.
I’d even say they are, for the most part, conditioned to be spending all their money on bullshit like bling, cars, houses and lots and lots and lots of sex/booze/clubs.
Realistically; they never stood a chance. The kind of women that are specifically tailor made for athletes to “oops” inside of and provide a nice paycheck for 18 years are some of the most ridiculous looking women you’ll never ever meet.
Thats just women; I’m not even talking about buying cars, car accessories, houses, house accessories, toys, TAXES and all the new relatives who need handouts or else they starve to death.
Being an athlete really must fucking suck because you just can’t talk to anyone that doesn’t have some sort of agenda.
Are idiots
The thing that struck me the most was his line “I called my financial guy…”
He’s way ahead of most athletes. Great mentality.
Yes, and the sky is blue.
No matter how much money you have, there is an army of powerful entities capable of taking it all in a very short amount of time. Capitalism, baby
A lot of people are bad at this too
Hey NBA player out there. I don’t want to work anymore. Please send me money. Thank you
To be fair, young adulthood is where a lot of us learn some hard lessons about finances and wants vs needs. A lot of these guys go from dependent to millionair with no in between step.
Most were never taught to which is not uncommon in society today.
There are a lot of reasons that can play into this. Most of them come from poor backgrounds, with folks who depend on them and they suddenly get all this money after they’ve had a lot less, all of that a very young age, while they’re still maturing. There are many realities.
And the ones who are good with it don’t make headlines.
yes, but also i think it’s just people in general. i feel the way haliburton feels at a much smaller scale. like people i know who make way less than i do, but drive luxury cars or swap out to a new iphone every year.
Most people are
It’s most people in general.
People*
A lot of people are really, really bad at managing money. Pretty much everyone tbh
A lot of people period, not just athletes. Financial literacy is very poor in America.
The main difference is that Hali has a financial advisor who he consults with regularly and the others do nor

I hated this documentary series, they turned people who suffer from both aquaphobia and selenophobia into a punchline.
Australia mentioned
Nor! Ron, nor!
I have a financial advisor that I message every week, you don’t need to be rich for it
Just pop into r/wallstreetbets and there are thousands of free financial advisors available
Those guys are the best! I used to have a 3 story house with a loving wife and now I’m living under a bridge smoking crack three times a day. Thanks r/wallstreetbets
Do you sell a program I could buy to achieve such success?
Phase 1: Buy Crack
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit
if you gotta ask then you can’t afford it
Only three times a day? Look at Mr willpower over here
And the wife….? What has become of her? Under the bridge, still loving and supporting, one would assume…? 🧐 🎩
learned one of my best financial lessons from that sub
quickest way to reach a million dollars is to start with three million. i’m currently working on hitting 10k from 100k but i’m using those principles all the same
I believe in you!
Does the wife count in this case
Add the /s. People won’t get it’s a joke lol
Had me in the first half 💀
only if you do the opposite of their advice
No offense but why on earth do you need to message your financial advisor every week? What’s so important that you need to stay in contact weekly? Why not monthly, or every six months?
I only invest in 0 DTE options contracts
I think he’s joking since he mentioned r/wallstreetbets.
It sounds like Hali has a financial advisor he trusts and not just a yes man.
Or their buddy or family member who they think they can trust.
You dont need a financial advisor. r/justbuyxeqt
Most anyone flying private does have that probably
I know people that go into debt to fly private. There are as many rich people that do it as there are stupid.
Oh yea? Who are these people
I remember watching an interview with a pilot who flies a private jet for money and he explained that he learned that most of his clients can’t afford to regularly fly like this, they just do it to get photos and footage for clout. He embraced that and started tailoring it so they’d emerge with better evidence and started getting even more business 🤷🏻♂️
My BIL was trying to rip him off for money and Hali’s financial advisor told him to cut ties. Good on him, by BIL is a POS.
Is your BIL still available? I have a business idea
He’s still living in the house my sister bought, but I think he spends most of his days drinking now. Hali used to pay for him to coach a girl’s basketball team but he started embezzling money, go figure.
How does Hali even know this guy??
Also great example of just because you make doesn’t mean you should save everyone
I think lots of them do, it just that they are related or can’t say no through fear of losing their job and are just giving terrible advice. But someone has that role, and is on payroll.
But that’s NOT always a good thing. I had a financial advisor who told me I couldn’t afford my house. I bought it anyway, and I paid 324k for it and now it’s worth 900k. People like that don’t want you to spend anything because they don’t want to get blamed when the money runs out.
wait, people looking to buy a 300k house have financial advisors. shit. what am i doing with my life.
This was in 1999. lol
damn, 300k in stocks then would be 3M today.
then again you can’t live on shares.
I mean I have a doctor too (not one I can just call up, but still). Do I listen to everything they tell me to do? Nope
What? Maybe you should listen to your doctor?
That’s how I feel about DoorDash and my little salary
At this point it’s not worth it most of the time. Just go pick up the food yourself. They make those prices up an insane amount.
I haven’t used door dash or any other similar apps as I usually just pick it up. Most of the time, I get so lazy with driving to pick up an order, I just don’t do it at all and I just end up making PB&J lol
PB&J my beloved. The “break glass in case of emergency” of the culinary world.
At this point? It wasn’t worth it from day 1 of it existing, unless you’re disabled with no ability to commute.
They used to have ridiculous deals that genuinely made it cheaper. Those are long gone.
It’s less worth it now than it was before though. and it’s extremely not worth it if you’re only ordering for yourself
Nah at one point it was worth it. During the pandemic they didn’t really have the price markups and the delivery fee was waived if you spent $20 on most restaurants. There’s also lots of drivers who were making decent money at it. You got your shit at a decent price and it was delivered intact and within a pretty quick delivery time. Especially if you left a decent tip because back then drivers saw the tip.
Nowadays even global chains have a pretty large markup on their prices, local restaurants are marked up like crazy. Then you’ve got a pretty hefty delivery fee a service fee. You’re looking at a solid 30% extra before the driver tip. The app puts an unrealistic preparation timeline onto the restaurant so restaurants end up marking things as ready for delivery to avoid being punished by the apps. The drivers don’t make shit anymore and there doesn’t seem to be enough of them. The drivers won’t wait at the restaurants for the food to actually be ready because now they have to do twice as many deliveries for probably about half as much pay. Every driver seems to be doing two or more deliveries per run as the apps stack “nearby deliveries” together. They don’t see your tip beforehand so when you’ve got a short delivery they don’t want to do it because it’s low money for them. Today the perfect delivery app experience is that you order something that should be \(20 and 20 minutes away and you pay \)35 and wait 35 minutes, but your food is correct, warm and prepared properly. Realistically it’s going to take at least 40 minutes after the first driver abandons the fare, the food will be cold, under-portioned and some combination of undercooked, burnt, soggy, dried out and damaged.
During those first few pandemic years it really was like paying $5 for a personal Butler to fetch you your favorite snack.
Those pandemic years I was making like \(25-\)30 an hour on average. Fucking loved that job back then but DoorDash found the perfect technique to cut down driver pay for more profits, mark ups and fees. Squeeze the customer and they’re less likely to leave a good tip (meanwhile base pay is still like $1.75 an order hahahaha). That company is the definition of corporate scum/greed and they’ve been sued multiple times for unethical practices.
Funny enough i just learned that earlier TODAY, doordash just settled at 130 million dollars on a lawsuit in NYC for underpaying drivers lmao.
Early days were subsidized by venture capital to build the brand and you could get genuine deals.
or simply baked as fuck
Exactly. Get the BOGO deal but walk or bike over there and pick it up yourself if possible. If you have to drive, fine, but it’s still way cheaper.
Are restaurant owners allowed to offer Bogo deals for delivery only?
I’ve been taking advantage of Bogo pickups from my local DoorDash restaurants recently and it’s literally cheaper than if I were to make the food myself
I can’t understand how these mom and pops are offering these deals. Plus these restaurants basically have them 24⁄7
I don’t know. I don’t think there’s a good incentive for them to offer it delivery only, as they don’t get any extra benefits from the UberEats driver fees.
Imho, the BOGO meals are usually easy-to-cook stuff where making double or triple the amount is easy to do. It’s not the rice and onions and diced up frozen chicken that breaks the bank at budget time.
Save a little more and make it yourself
Saves a lot more. Only time I ever buy fast food is on long trips where I can’t make food. The prices are outrageous
There are some sick deals on DoorDash sometimes where it’s objectively cheaper to use than going out (but also only if you have the dash pass so that monthly fee can just make it a wash) but yeah it’s almost always better to just go and pick it uo
It’s a godsend when you have a stomach bug and don’t want to go to the grocery store for crackers and ginger ale and Pedialyte
Otherwise yeah it’s a waste
I got into a really bad food delivery habit during COVID, and I’d honestly still probably be doing it if they didn’t jack up the fees and provide such garbage tier service. Food always takes half an hour to get to you, is always lukewarm at best, and if you ordered a drink you’re guaranteed it’s spilled in transit. It’s amazing.
I only do pickup. Restaurants often charge higher prices for delivery. Then you also have to tip. I rather just grab it myself.
I order it because I’m drunk or high.
It’s not even worth it when you pick it up. Fast food/restaurants are insanely expensive.
I unfortunately am chained to a desk 12 hours a day and can’t leave. So I door dash like 3 times a week just because I really don’t have time to do anything else
Yeah that’s an exception where I get it, that’s why I said “most times”
Buy one get one Doordash for the win every time. Only time I’ll use it. Only places with no delivery fee
Yep, I started doing this on UberEats maybe a year ago, and now BOGO is all over the apps. You have to be careful though, some places will charge \(26 for a hamburger “buy one, get one“ 🙄. But I can get two legit meals — if I do pickup — for under \)20, and I live in one of the most expensive cities in the country.
And then do you just not tip? I don’t know how door dash works but I assume you’re supposed to tip right?
Not only tip, tip before you even get the service.
Accepting pre-tipping should unironically be illegal. It makes no sense whatsoever.
Doordash doesn’t “prepay” their drivers, why should I?
You can change the tip up to an hour after delivery just so you know
It’s less of a tip and more of a “bid” for the best drivers to choose your order.
The best dashers get priority on orders and will only take a certain amount of $$$ per mile. No great dasher is going to jeopardize their status by delivering poorly on a high tip order.
When your order just sits there, then you begin to get the inexperienced newer drivers and it’s pretty awful.
Doordash and other delivery companies have basically offloaded driver payment onto customer tips. As a result it’s important for us to see what a customer is tipping before accepting the offer. I’m not going to drive all the way across town for a $1 tip when that’s like 75% of my salary.
So in this context, pre-tipping makes sense. But the real issue is the companies not paying us a reasonable wage and having to rely on tips.
It’s a bid not a tip. If $7 is too much of an ask to stay in your house then sure go pick it up.
it’s just a bid. if someone’s willing to take your order for no tip then there you go
typically i’d tip \(2-3 and service fee is up to \)2. so \(5 on top of the doordash upcharge but any decent deals can get you back to what it should cost in person. there’s a few places near me that do the bogo and it comes out to under \)25 for basically two days of lunch delivered to my workplace. which is solidly average in socal if i decide not to cook
Would you say on average that your tip combined with the service fee would be equivalent percentage-wise to what you would tip in person at a sit down restaurant?
Refer yourself for the \(20 referral credit and \)15 sign-up credit. Delete your account and repeat.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Thank you.
I still dont get it, i can cook dinner for a fraction of the cost and have it ready faster than door dash delivers. Plus my food is fresh and hot.
But with door dash you can just lay there and wait for ur food
Right lol. It’s not hard to understand
Unless they only give you half of your order and the restaurant forgets it or the dasher steals it and likely eats it, then you lose the $50 meal you paid for and didn’t receive and then DD won’t refund your money. Ask me how I know.
You have to spend time getting groceries, cooking, and cleaning. It’s not all about cost, and you can do other stuff while waiting around.
Still not worth it.
With BOGO its typically slightly cheaper than takeout, if you dont understand why that is appealing idk what to say
Its not i just checked one of those BOGO deals
with delivery a \(14.50 meal comes out to \)27 total to be delivered.
or i could pick up the same deal at $12.92.
I don’t use DoorDash, but I do get take out. Cooking takes time in prep and dishes. There are definitely times I don’t want to do that.
Still a no for me. If it’s not worth my time to go get it for free, it’s not worth my money to order
That type of food delivery doesn’t make sense, you’re paying a guy to drive to a restaurant, wait for food, drive to your place and deliver it.
That’s 20-40 mins of wages depending on traffic, plus gas, the cost of the restaurant food and the delivery app fee.
You end up paying a huge premium to eat cold, container-tasting food.
Yep, doordash had me on some Wall-E type shit.
Glad i was able to break free from some very stupid habits.
Come on…I absolutely get that Door Dash’s mark ups plus delivery fees are complete bullshit, but you can’t downplay the value proposition of the convenience of having food delivered to your door…
Pizza delivery has been a thing decades before these apps popped up.
So in theory the restaurant is supposed to make the food before the driver arrives, to prevent the driver from having to wait for the food.
Some restaurants are not very diligent about sticking to this rule. I know Five Guys is one of the worst.
I get food delivery fairly often and I get cold food maybe 1 in 20 orders if that. I also don’t order from 7 miles away like an asshole tho.
They generally arent devoted to your order, the algos stack up multiple deliveries to make it more efficient.
Some people get the Doordash DashPass for free from their work or possibly a credit card. So they don’t pay service or delivery fees. Even then… they are paying marked up delivery prices that restaurants use to cover the fees DoorDash charges them plus the tip for the driver. I always just drive and get the food myself now, basically stopped after I was about to check out one day and realized I would be paying over \(50 for three burritos from a local place that I know only charges \)8.50 per burrito in person.
For a lot of people, it’s a completely insignificant amount of money.
It is shocking to me to see how much people use it in their lives. I know people who use it 4-6 times a week and it comes out to hundreds of dollars a week. For that cost, why not just hire a meal prep housekeeper and also have your house clean and eat healthy food all week?
I remember one friend that doordash taco bell thats literally A BLOCK AWAY because he is too high/lazy to get up. Bro you paid 10 dollars for a cheese taco
I live in a 3rd world country and I do the same tbh, i’d rather spend my time doing productive things than go get/prepare food for 10 minutes.
Maybe I should change too lol.
People saying they’d rather do productive things rather than cook/prep or even pickup themselves are always the ones who in aggregate can definitely spend at least an hour less on doomscrolling or playing game or whatever to do it. It’s almost never actually productive time you’re saving.
That’s fair, maybe just a cop out from me. I’ll start tomorrow!! :)
Well are you getting paying third world prices for delivery while making a first world salary? Because that’s a different story
Not sure about american prices, but 1 delivery here would cost you \(5-\)10 just like what OP said.
“Well off” / “comfortable” single people here make \(1,200 after taxes w/ a modest monthly spending of \)1k.
I would imagine a good salary on a decent city in the US is at least $7k per month. And you can probably have 15-20% savings on that.
Lmao i have no idea why i went on this tangent, has nothing to do with me ordering every meal. It’s just crazy to me that 1st world countries make 5x as much money but only pay twice as much on food.
DoorDash and food delivery are the new avocado toast
What. Avocado toast was facetious because it was legitimately a niche thing that hardly bumped your day to day income. Doordash is easily a 40-60% markup on already expensive food, they aren’t comparable
Avocado toast is also healthy lol
And avocado toast was like $12 when they were making a stink about it.
The insane part about Doordash is not just the prices and fees - it’s that the food comes late and cold AND you pay an extra \(10-\)20 in fees for it.
Except they are. You can go to a breakfast place get three eggs sausage and hash browns for like 8 dollars. The avo toast will be min 12 bucks
Yea the price is comparable. Did you miss the part where i said its niche? I’d wager the majority of young people doordash every few days at least. Majority did not eat avocado toast at all or even with even normal frequency.
Nah, fuck that whole stance on things.
I’m 35 and in my early 20s my roomates and me were ordering takeout every day. We never learned how to cook and were lazy. I knew it was expensive, but I never bothered to do the math so I didn’t fully appreciate the cost per year. This was before DoorDash even really got popular so I was picking up food myself which is the cheaper route.
Well, it’s about \(15 per meal without DoorDash. I guess DoorDash adds like \)5 at least on top? So are people paying something like \(20 per meal? If you cook yourself then it's literally more like \)4.
So that’s \(16 additional dollars I was spending per day completely unnecessarily. That's around \)5,840 per year. You don’t get to dismiss this as unimportant. I know there are too many people getting takeout regularly and it is actually fucking over those finances in significant ways.
Two things can be true at once. It can be true that the economy is brutal to a lot of people right now and it can also be true that people are irresponsibly ordering too much takeout and they would be way better off if they learned how to do some basic cooking. I know this because I lived it. I learned how to cook at about age 26 and I put the savings into a retirement fund each year. Like the math on this is easy to do and it’s shocking how inefficient it is to get takeout regularly.
Never, ever, ever give door dash money. SHIT company.
I bring a ham sandwich to work, so my wife can door dash at work. The little sacrifices that count, lmao.
I have dash pass free with my chase card. I ordered from a restaurant the other day that had a deal and even with the menu inflation, it came out within 5 bucks for 3 people if I had gone myself, based on prices listed on their actual website. I only use it because of dash pass and I will only choose a restaurant offering a deal.
Agree. I give myself maybe 1 DoorDash a month when I’m in a pinch, usually less. Otherwise I operate on the “if I can’t pick it up, I don’t deserve it” model
Looking at an \(18 burrito turn into \)42 at checkout gives you that exact same sick feeling.
I have friends that I know make more than me and always act like they’re broke, which used to always confuse me because
I feel like I’m pretty comfortable and can generally afford to do what I want.
I realized recently they’re spending hundreds, maybe upwards of $1,000 on DoorDash a month. Meal
deliveries sometimes multiple times a day.
Good salaries are wasted on people like that.
Gotta cook/groceries until you like it and get good at it
The best way to use DoorDash or UberEats I think to get pick up orders that have deals. But someone told me that I am really screwing restaurants that way because they essentially lose money on those types of orders.
Those restaurants are choosing to participate in pickup and those deals. Nobody should feel bad for utilizing them.
The thing is, there should probably be something in-between that rich folks can fly that isn’t just the regular Southwest sardines. I feel like there would be a market for a jet where basically the lowest seat price and configuration is business plus. All the perks and wifi etc. are included. Then you go up from there and the top ten “seats” are actually private compartments (like a train compartment) so it feels like flying private.
So that regular sized 737 instead of carrying like 250 people squished in, its carrying 50 people. So obviously seats are going to run \(2,000 for "coach" but a private jet costs like \)50,000+.
JSX operates somewhat in that space, but I don’t think they have private compartments or 737s. It would likely be hard to get enough people wanting to go to the same destination at the same time and be willing to pay enough to make operating a giant jet profitable.
Have a friend in their 30s who is constantly broke, cant afford a movie ticket broke. Doordashes and Uber eats all the time.
I have a friend, makes less than I do that doordashes and Uber eats like 3-4x a week, I’m not paying for it but it still makes me uncomfortable.
The last receipt I was was like $52 for an order, basically an entree and an appetizer. Sorry, i.just.cant, I’ll call it in and pick it up, only exception is if I’m alone and hammered which is pretty dam rare
I see my neighbors get door dash multiple times ago and have no idea how they afford it, even if they don’t buy groceries for the most part.
DoorDash? Might as well buy a yacht
The only way any of them are worth it is when somewhere like Walmart/Target offers direct delivery. They’ll tack on a delivery fee, but they don’t also mark up all the goods 10-40% as well.
Works nicely if you’re getting back from a trip and emptied your fridge out before leaving. Get back Saturday have the groceries deliverd on Sunday and you’re set for the week and you don’t gotta leave the house to deal with people.
But that is like the only time the vlue is there. Ubereats Door Dash etc? Fuckem all.
100%. I’m comfortably middle class and I will drive my ass to Chick-Fil-A to pick up my spicy sando and fries.
That’s how I feel about DoorDash and I have pretty decent HHI!
Doordash
is a little ridiclous. I see dudes order doordash, who I make a lot more money than, and when I was getting these service fees and delivery fees, I had to call my financial advisor like ‘Am I missing something?’ I know I make way more this guy and he’s dashing it up… I can’t do that everytime, it makes me sick
Last week my \(9 Panda Express order was gonna be \)17 after all the fees. I just sucked it up for 3 more hours and picked it up on my way home.
thank you! People who make way less than me door dash and I don’t understand how or why. Just go get the food yourself
Ordered DoorDash the other day and the driver stole my order, and DoorDash immediately “reviewed” and denied my claim for my money back. Garbage company
I have a decent salary but would never pay extra to have food delivered. Not only is there a delivery fee, but the food costs more on the app and it gets to my house cold. Did it a few times in early COVID but it’s been 5+ years since I tried it.
I’ve come to realize that DoorDash/Uber Eats people are kind of like the same people who go to McDonald’s and just get what they order all the time regardless of price because they’re just kind of rolling with the punches of when it was more affordable. Right now I still do Uber Eats but only for pick up unless there’s a special occassion or I am feeling downright lazy, but even then, I still check places for good deals that counter the inflated price. There are plenty of places that do buy 1, get 1 free deals, and the item itself is maybe a $1 more than regular price, so it makes for a fantastic deal.
I genuinely can’t comprehend how people order delivery all the time. Like it’s just the biggest waste of money in the world to me. You’re paying like $7 extra just for somebody else to go to the store and pick it up for you
What gets me is people paying $1000 for a gaming console, like what are we doing??
I work in tech and got to talk to Tyrese on video chat a few times because he was a customer of the company I worked for at the time.
Dude could not have been nicer and more down to earth. Not a pacers fan, will always root for this guy and not surprised he has a good head on his shoulders about his money.
He has the same energy and personality in every platform I’ve seen him on. Dude is the definition of just being yourself and listening to others
Dude was very authentic.
Yeah Haliburton gotta be my new pick for nicest guy in the nba. Primarily because I can see him giving everyone an equal opportunity to have a pleasant interaction with him. Like he never thinks he’s too cool for anyone. He’s probably chill with everyone
Who was your old pick?
Metta World Peace
Gotta be a tie between him and Steven Adams for nicest player at least active
Right now it’s a battle between Hali, McCain, and Edgecombe for me
Did you notice the voice change thing? He’s the one athlete I want to meet just to hear the voice change lol.
He did it once and it totally caught me off guard how it shifted, should’ve been more prepared haha
Voice change?
Extreme example
More recent example
What the heck haha
u can tell hali ain’t gonna be one of those athletes who goes broke in retirement
he’s really just a normal dude with normal thoughts
Nay the inner workings of his mind be an enigma 😂

Always misquote it
patrick star quote?? right on
Just a normal dude? He just said he doesn’t fly private every time lmao. Not that he books discount on Expedia like us.
I think he’s normal in he’s practical about flying private in comparison to the cost.
He basically said he flys private when there’s not a direct flight from indy and commercial when there’s not. That’s pretty sensible in the sense that flying private is “splurging” for him, so he does it when it’s going to save him time and hassle.
Obviously it’s not “normal” to fly private like that but it’s the thought process a normal, responsible person would have If they had the money Tyrese has.
He also said he’ll be flying private a lot more if he gets another big contract later in the interview.
He basically said he flys private when there’s not a direct flight from indy and commercial when there’s not.
the difference in hassle between direct flights vs one with many connections is huge. Flying somewhere direct is such a time and energy saver
Thats more like a private charter which is different than flying private. Many people can fly private with jet suite x or similar companies. Chartering is far more expensive. You’re basically taking a crew and a jet and aiming them at a direction that they dont fly daily.
But he could fly private, and he chooses not to. He has the normal dude mentality but has the salary where it would be dumb to hunt for discounts regardless
Th guy bought his DJ set used on Facebook marketplace and met the guy in the parking lot of a Krispy Kreme. He’s an odd duck lol and it’s awesome.
Imagine selling your DJ equipment and the guy asks to meet you at a krispy Kreme and it’s hali.
He literally said in that interview he flew private to get to the interview.
Yeah man, you are JUST like him! Don’t let anyone tell you different
Normal in personality
Expedia is often more than just booking with airline direct lol. Also, use a fucking points card if you want to travel. My flight for 2 people to Chicago next month has cost me $380 with the flight out there being first class. Bought round trip in points and upgraded the first part with cash. People in general suck at utilizing credit rewards.
Normal person. Shit tons of money.
Some of ya’ll true artists. He has a contract worth 1⁄5 of a billion, he’s not “normal” by any definition. That’s not their point. Conservative estimate on investment of 200 million is 8 million return a year. That’s 4%. He also doesn’t have 200 million, half taxed, another half probably going to managers, trainers, chefs, etc. That’s still 50 million and he’s not going anywhere, he will still make a lot more money.
Their point is he doesn’t spam private jets everywhere and a good 10 minutes of this convo about how he buys everything half price, even now, off ebay and marketplaces. He even mentions he uses private when he’s on vacations, how do you know they aren’t in a tropical paradise, and this interview isn’t part of his vacation?
As opposed to what?
Michael Porter Jr.
Exactly this. I think he’s gonna be set for life after he retires because he’s careful about how he spends his money.
Nah, dude is made up of 2 dudes. One is Tyrese, and the other is Hali. So we don’t know which one is going to take over once he retires.
Delusional
He was raised by real
Parents, not hood rats waiting for their son to make it so they can cash in themselves.
This is so coded 🤣
If we’re being honest, speaking with experience as a normal guy with normal or below average intelligence, he’s probably one step above. I’d 100% go broke after retirement. No way id be able to restrain myself from buying useless shit considering I already buy way too much useless shit
I had to call my financial advisor like ‘Am I missing something?’
I mean if most players have a financial advisor and listen to them I would guess they wouldn’t go broke either
Didn’t JJ say on his pod a few years ago that no players really go broke anymore because the contracts have gotten so big?
Like a role player on the mid-level is making more than Duncan was during his MVP seasons.
Like Mitch Richmond is in the HOF, a 6x All-Star, played for 14 years and next season De’Aaron Fox will make more for that one season than Mitch did in his entire career.
Didnt Malik Beasley just go broke. JJ just runnin nba pr😂
i think malik beasley might be an outlier brotha
This can’t be true, especially considering the price on everything has gone up substantially in that same period. Feels like PR for the NBA
NBA salaries have far outpaced inflation.
If we go back 25 years the MLE was 2.25MM in 2001 this year it was a little over 15MM.
The 35% of cap Max was 14MM in 2001 and this year it’ll be almost 57.75MM
Sports league laugh at inflation.
In the same interview, he talks about still buying stuff off Facebook marketplace 🤣
and Ebay!
He’s gonna make bank on his second career as a media guy…nobody else has 3 different voices
He’s only 997 behind Mel Blanc!
“ehh what’s up DocNew York?”
Not watched any of the clips but he seems like a good guy
I was a manager for the Iowa State women’s team one year when he was there, and he is exactly like he comes across in these interviews. Super friendly, outgoing, and polite, not a single person on either side of that building ever had something bad to say about him as a person.
Normal voice Hali, but what about deep-voice Hali?
The NBA retirement and pension package for players who have a decently long career make it really hard for players to be that broke anymore. At least when their old enough to collect.
Wouldn’t surprise me to find Hali on /r/Bogleheads
Lebron is a billionaire who still tries to use public WiFi whenever he can
“Act broke, stay rich”
Unless his financial advisor robs him
!remindme 15 years
This is the equivalent of seeing your neighbor buy a $60k truck when you know he makes less than you and you drive a 2019 Toyota Rav4.
Look at mr money bags, with his 7 year old car! Car isnt even old enough to drink yet
Said I had a 2010 Mazda at work the other day and people gasped. What has this world come to
The used market is weird right now so I get why some people just buy new, but I was always raised on some old ass cars. 1999 F150, 2001 Saturn, first car I bought myself was an 08 Altima. Just now graduated to a brand new to me 2013 Prius C. In the process of learning how to actually do all the maintenance myself and want to actually make it last at least another 10-15 years if I can
It has always been like this. I bought a brand new Mazda3 when I got my first adult job out of college, with a three year loan. After I paid it off, people in the office immediately started asking me what my next car was gonna be. The car was less than 5 years old, I kept telling everyone I was gonna drive it into the ground.
Ended up selling it to Carvana during the pandemic for more than I bought it for originally lmao.
I’m still driving my 2006 carolla. I was gonna upgrade a few years ago but man, it’s impossible to find a decent used car for under 20k, that’s actually worth an upgrade. Even 8 year old camrys are over 20k. I’m probably gonna keep driving my current car and will treat myself with an expensive detail to get that new used car feeling.
I have a new grad coworker (I work in HR… so not very lucrative lol) who has a 2025 Mazda CX-5 (not from mommy and daddy either). I’m still driving my 2012 accord that I bought in high school in 2016. I don’t understand how kids are buying $35k+ brand new cars right out of college??
I still drive my 2014 CX-5 and I don’t see a need to switch in the next 5 years. I like that my car doesn’t track or distract me.
I’m happily driving my once-top-of-the-line 2006 Honda CRV. I also tell my kids that anyday now it will be considered a classic car, like an 80s Landrover, but they just roll their eyes and ask to be dropped off one block away from school.
my car isnt even from this century
They’re surprised how well you maintained the car is all
People still assume my 2008 Saab is new lol
for real, I saw that post and was thinking 2019 was still a new car
Too true, lol! I’m finally making seven figures, and I drive around in a 2003 GMC.
Just out of sheer curiosity if you don’t mind answering, what line of work are you in and/or what is the source of that much income? Self employment? Equity? Partner at a firm?
I’m an econometrician.
I don’t make anywhere near that but drive an ‘02 Saturn.
While it’s partly out of necessity, I also just enjoy cars from the 2000s—fewer points of failure, physical buttons, etc.
I’d really only add lane assist and adaptive cruise.
And I saw your other comment; that’s a sweet gig, friend. I dropped out of my Econ major (just undergrad—made it through most of my junior year) to get into electrical work. I’m sure I’ll regret it in a decade, but I’m happy for now.
Bro… I can’t believe it’s 7 years ago already that’s crazy. I saw 2019 and just thought it was a new car still
My father in law works at a car dealership and he has endless stories of dudes who haven’t paid off their previous vehicle refinancing and paying many hundreds a week or whatever it is for a new(er), gianter truck, when they can’t in any defensible way afford any of these things. The dealership is happy to finance them into financial oblivion of course, it’s not their problem, homie what you doing.
this is a genre of youtube/tiktok video, and i honestly don’t mind it
one of my favorites is a dude that bought a porsche to door dash then called back in two days to try and return it because the gas was too expensive. no clue what ppl are doing out there
I get sucked into those now and again as they make me feel like a financial genius because I have a paid off car, no c-card debt, and I don’t do sports gambling.
That actually does make you a financial genius in 2026 compared to your average person
There’s this dude with a bowtie who works at a Benz dealership who makes videos about people doing just the dumbest shit with car financing and it makes me feel so validated driving my shitbox I bought for six grand cash back in 2015
Still going strong, baby. Haven’t had a car payment since the Obama administration
My uncle works as a bailiff doing repossessions for car loans and rental cars. He says they’re really, really busy.
Imagine doing that a few times over just to default and be left with no car, no credit, and tens of thousands down the drain.
kamdacloser
Best part of my rav4 is it’s paid off though. Sad part is the new ones aren’t even affordable anymore like seemingly every car nowadays.
The new ones are nowhere near as reliable as the older ones.
I don’t know the numbers on reliability but my biggest qualm with the 6th gen is that they are hideous. The grilles look like a laundry basket.
If you’re comparing between stuff like added electronics true. But if we’re comparing purely on the ability of the vehicle to move I.e. engine, newer ones are definitely more reliable. Not that you should buy a new one, definitely keep until the engine breaks.
I mean you’re still wrong. The old tundra v8 was fucking bulletproof and the 5th gen v6 on the 4Runner was also pretty much unbreakable.
I had a 96 Rav4 in college, had over 100k miles, and my dumbass drove it absolutely bone dry, no oil, for a year and that thing still turns on without a hitch.
That was almost a decade ago and it’s still going strong. I went home to visit family and my dad wanted to check the oil. He came in and went “how long have you been driving the car like this?”. I said “the oil light never came on so I never checked 🤷”.
I have since learned my ways and treat my cars better. But I know if that was another car it would have fuckin blown up lmao.
I know a dude with a new Raptor, he works as a mechanic, doesn’t own the shop though
His fiancé was telling me they’re spending 150k on their wedding, their parents aren’t helping. She doesn’t work.
My GF was asking me how I think they afford it and I was like “they can’t. They are 100% in a massive amount of debt.”
My old coworker just bought a Mercedes Benz, then told me he plans to spend 80k on his wedding; same scenario where his wife “works” a job but he pays for everything. I knew for a fact he was making 80k CAD, before taxes. It was crazy hearing him list out his plans seemingly oblivious to how much shit he’s about to get into
2019 Rav4 is a fantastic vehicle
2019 rav4 is still a 20k car
2019? My 2007 Corolla is still going strong
I have this thought all the time. Like I know I make more than that mf and I cannot fathom purchasing whatever they just bought it truly baffles me
60k trucks are some cheapass base models nowadays. They regularly get up over 100k.
This is pretty overboard lol
The cheapest models of full sized trucks like Silverado and F-150s start at like 40k~ brand new and you can get all the performance options like Double Cabs and 4WD going up to around 60k~. You’d have to get a super fucking luxury edition Raptor with every vanity option possible to hit 100k+
Only exception would be EV vehicles but those make up less then 2% of drivers on the road according to the DMV so not really great comparisons for the everyday joe.
Try 2007, 2019 is still too pricy.
And I sold my 1999 to get the 07. We could buy two brand new cars, were not poor, just practical
team 2007 here as well. I really want to buy another car. I just went to africa and rented the cheapest car I could there. it still had more bells and whistles than my 07 sienna. really got me thinking about upgrading. but this toyota just won’t die. it’s going strong, even. cannot justify the expense.
Oh shit, we both own siennas, that’s funny. I don’t mind it, it has the 3.5, gets ok milage and I can literally put a dining room table in the back. It’s not flashy but its paid for and runs well, my last toyota has 230k miles and I sold it running, so I could have this free fkn car another 5+ years.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading to a 2019 Toyota RAV4, I’ve got a 2007 Honda CRV!
In what world would someone look down on a 2019 Rav4. Probably one of the most reliable cars you can have. Put 200k on that thing and enjoy no car payment for 15 years.
Except I have a 2011 Rav4 lmao
Im sort of confused here because a 2019 rav 4 is pretty nice compared to an actual beater.
More like someone with a 2026 Honda compared to someone with a Porsche
A 2019 Rav4 is a financially responsible daily for someone with a middle class salary. A $60k truck isn’t.
I dont agree with either of those but at the end of the day people do what people do.
That gen of Rav4 was nice though
Of course Haliban prefers public jets
Talking about this in the big September no less
well, he did take down New York
Reminds me of that tragedy
Jfc dude lol
A man of the people like JC himself, who gave salvation to the public instead of keeping it to the jews lol
11 days removed from the anniversary and you making this joke LMAO
I mean, at least the taliban weren’t the ones behind the attack (looking at you Israel).
You mean Saudi Arabia?
Just because 15 out of the 19 who hijacked the plane were Saudi does not mean (checks notes) Iraq and Afghanistan were not responsible.
Lmfao
Amazing comment
We’re just commenting on Reddit, get a grip dude
Oh shit, didn’t realize I was replying to a comment.
More casualties. Genius
Help me understand
Hali’s nickname is the Haliban
Haliban=Taliban
9⁄11
They did 911?
https://youtu.be/svrt3-o8fCA
It’s a t*rrorism joke. Haliban is a meme of Haliburton with Osama beard beard and outfit.
We self censoring terrorism now?
shut up terrorist r*dditor
I’m lowkey here for that joke 💀. What’s the saying? Comedy = tragedy + time
And Haliburton loves the war they create
LMFAOOOOOO
this is stupid
That’s why half the league is broke within 5 years of leaving the league.
It’s insanity how easy it is to not be broke. Set up a trust you can’t touch that gives you \(10k a month or throw \)1mil in an index fund that will set you up for life, etc
Set up a trust you can’t touch that gives you \(10k a month or throw \)1mil in an index fund that will set you up for life, etc
I don’t know man. I’m just a guy and make more than \(10k/month. And I really don't think \)1M will set you up for life these days.
For real. Moved to LA, and 10k a month is not enough lol, especially if kids are in the mix.
If you lived in a reasonable part of North East Ohio you could live like a king! But also: snow
Family of four, to be comfy in california, currently needs a family income of 300k.
And I really don’t think $1M will set you up for life these days.
With a \(10k month budget, you’d want substantially more than \)1M to keep up the standard of living for retirement. Probably north of $5M
10M will get you 500k to 1m a year in annual income. Thats pretty comfy
It will at least set you up so that you’re not homeless ever again.
Yeah I don’t pray to be so rich that I never have to work again, just so that I know I could survive unemployment for a few months like damn lmao.
Winning a mil in the lottery used to be life changing money, winning a mil now won’t even buy you a house in a lot of places here in Aus.
Yeah this goes for basically every major city centre in the world. Real estate prices, fucking insane.
Depends where you live. 1m in any HCOL city is really the bare minimum for not being homeless. I’d say set for life is like 10m in any HCOL if you’re smart with the money. 1m is probably doable if you move to Columbia or Thailand
As a BB player, 10k a month would be tough to live off of, but 20-30k would still have the same impact.
I assume there’s likely a lot of personal trainers, nutrition, excercize equipment etc you have to buy.
I was more talking about post NBA life
20-30k is even more because you see 85%+ of it. It’s not like a salary of 240k-360k a year where you get taxed 40%+
That’s 20-30 million at 2% a year for 50 years however, it will end up lasting longer because of gains.
I think some vices also play a role. Gambling specifically. If you buy a bunch of luxury goods, you can theoretically sell those. If you lose money gambling, it’s just gone. Losing is basically uncapped too. No one is going to stop you from betting literally as much as you’re able.
For sure. I just mean the general behavior as if the contracts are never going away.
Personally I didn’t think he was referencing other basketball players when he was talking about this. Especially because toward the end he used rappers as an example of they can fly commercial and hide
Without rewatching, I think the host brought rappers into the mix. But I would guess rappers have a worse rate of going broke.
Yeah for sure, honestly just musicians in general. The money comes quick and slows even faster.
Crazy thing is honestly that shit even happens with bankers on Wall Street. A Former investment banker and now multimillion dollar investor was talking about how he knows people that spend just as quickly as they make their money. People will go broke trying not to look broke.
Everyone spends like the income will always be there. It’s just more likely to end sooner in the entertainment industry.
This can’t be a true stat in last decade. NFL I could see but no way in the NBA.
I actually really like Hali. An acquaintance of mine is a former teammate of his in college, was at his wedding this summer. All the non public stuff I see about Hali is just as good as this. Totally unhateable off the court.
The new Steph
Wait who do you know? Michael Jacobson or something I’m an ISU fan
If you crept my reddit and seen the subs I comment in the most; and then compare that with the 2018-19 team, you’d probably be able to find your answer very quickly
There’s a whole industry behind buying planes and renting them out to subsidize the cost of ownership and flying private
I don’t think he’s talking about ownership here anyway though, he’s just talking about chartering. Those can run you $10-25K for a one way trip if you’re going international. It really is stupid when you could get first class and a black car service end to end for 10% of that.
I think you mean $10-25k per hour
I mean per person assuming several fliers, but yeah it works out similarly. And ofc it’s a huge range.
It is bc there are private planes that can fit 6-8 passengers and there private jets that are way fancier and can hold more
Where do you find first class international tickets for $1k ?
Made Up Number Air.
https://www.google.com/travel/flights/s/VqDS7A3KEY6ECDVJ7
The \(10-25K I said before was assuming a short private flight like from the US to Nassau or something. Short international first class can be <\)1000 but obviously often way more.
I got lucky one time and got to fly private (it was like a Beechcraft King Air 200, not a PJ lol) and while the convenience is incredible, even if I was making NBA money it’s not something I would get in the habit of doing.
International first class tickets are often like 8-15k one way dawg
Coach Carlisle has a small plane that he’s licensed to fly, so that might be a route Hali takes later on.
AITA or is that just flagrant class warfare.
Planes are expensive, it makes sense to rent them out when you aren’t using them. Even airlines will do this to make ends meet.
So the costs are lowered for private flyers and plane owners, by buying and renting out planes. Maybe I’m being a little presumptive but if those planes are capable for use for average consumers then this is just k shaped economics subsidizing benefiting higher end travel while leaving less planes for everyone else to commute in.
How is it a subsidy? They are renting them out to other rich people with no tax dollars or poor people involved
Commercial flight prices are not constrained by the number of small private planes… These guys are not taking 737s out of the available inventory.
Somebody renting out their lambo to other rich people when they aren’t driving it doesn’t make your Camry more expensive.
They’re racking up AMEX black balance charges which will one day be the reason they’re broke asf when they leave the league
Then we will have to hear them go on a podcast and explain to all of us why $100 million dollars isn’t very much money
Depends on the individual. Your average person? More than you can reasonably spend.
Phillip rivers and his progeny? Well thats basically the population of a small state anyway
Noted. Philip rivers and Antonio Rodgers Cromartie are the only people that I want to hear from.
Anthony Edwards next up, but he’s got more work to do
That guy needs a jet to go see all his kids.
If he was actually active in their lives.
This is funny because I have a personal story from when I flew with him 3 years ago.
There were only two flights out of Newark to Indy, and one got canceled, so people were scrambling to get on the second one. We had first class seats but got downgraded and a partial refund, which was fine because at least we could get home that night. Our new seats were right up against first class, and I remember seeing someone I recognized and told my wife, “I swear that’s Haliburton,” but I was trying to be sure.
He took his shoes off, kicked his feet up, and watched Alvin and the Chipmunks most of the flight. We didn’t get in until after midnight, and I saw him again at baggage claim with his (then) girlfriend and confirmed it was him. It was too late, and I didn’t want to be a tool, so I didn’t go up to him, but I’ll always remember the flight that Hali stole my seat.
but I’ll always remember the flight that Hali stole my seat.
absolutely. I think in this situation it’s sort of understandable because he is tall but I do wonder if celebs or rich people ever feel bad for just exercising their fame to kick out the every day person. Like last minute restaurant reservations for a place that has been fully booked for months. Probably not but I certainly would.
I imagine you get used to it, and people do it all the time, even in “less rich” ways. Take an amusement park “fast pass”. You don’t necessarily need to be rich to get those for a day, but you have an edge on most people there. I doubt many that carry those passes think twice about all the people they are passing because they paid their hard-earned money for it. The same logic goes across anything like this, TSA pre-check, first class to private planes in private airports. It is all the same kind of thing just at different scales.
Very true
I think twice about buying the fast pass but it’s one of the few “upgrade” perks I do because I feel it maximizes my time at the park. Of course I realize how fortunate I am to be able to.
Restaurants have some tables they can make up for situations like these. Also some restaurants would say no, but instead give them an earlier reservation than the back of the line.
Celebrities don’t show up to celebrity restaurants at the door and expect to get in. They book it via their secretary.
Not sure if Hali taking your seat or spending his time watching Alvin and the chipmunks is more memorable tbh
Maybe Alvin and the Chipmunks honestly, he was locked in watching it lol
This is how I feel when I see my coworkers have kids. Like how tf do you fit a kid in that budget.
I know daycare is expensive, but sometimes kids just keep you home playing with toys on the floor instead of going out and spending money.
You go to the park and throw a ball instead of go to the bar and the club and come home at 2 AM. It’s a cheaper lifestyle.
I dunno about you but I definitely wasn’t spending $3k a month going out lol
Yes. You think life is expensive because you are spending a lot of money on eating out, traveling, etc, and those are all things you no longer get to do when you have kids (at least while they are young), so your spend in those categories goes to zero, to compensate for your spend on the children.
dogs do the same thing cheaper
For me, turning 30 kept me home from the club. Shit is absolutely exhausting.
im not gonna say what my job is or my wage, but im making like just enough to be able to live on my own (which in itself is a luxury in the current year) and someone with the same job told me he had 7 kids. i really could not wrap my head around that. im already budgeting and im fully single lol
My brother makes as much as I do (60k), is the sole breadwinner, and has 4 kids… idk how he does it, I can barely afford myself
I have worked for billionaires who fly commercial even when they already own PJs because they’re so annoyed at operating costs.
One guy had an employee whose sole job was to manage the boss’ boats and planes. But he became a broker because the boss repeated the same cycle: annoyed at operating costs, so we sell stuff. Then get bored without toys, buy stuff. Repeat.
I had a family friend billionaire growing up and the guy decided it was easier to simply buy and run his own private airline. Even with professional sport contracts and gov. contracts there wasn’t money being made. The personal benefits were insane though obviously.
Yeah this was the thing I noticed most: they always tried to rationalize it with business sense. “I can charter it and pay for the operating expenses, maybe even make money.” Eventually I got comfortable enough with one of these guys to just say “You’ll be a lot happier if you just think of this as a personal expense that you can afford. Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a massively expensive headache.”
It wasn’t Warren buffet that’s for sure.
He wishes
I think about this shit all the time. It seems completely normal. I do OK but so many people around me waste money on stupid shit and I wonder how they can afford it. Then I think maybe they have life figured out and are living in the moment and I’m the idiot.
There is a healthy balance between living in the moment and thinking about the future.
Can’t really knock anyone for how they choose to do it though when it could all be over anytime.
Yup. I struggle with the balance as I’m sure a lot of people do. I’ve always lived well below my means so I’d be comfortable in the future… but the future is now and I can’t seem to let loose.
I grew up sorta poor, food stamps at times and what not. Listened to my parents talk about one day this, one day that. Then my dad died in his 40s. Luckily my wife is good with money and has kept me from living too much in the now and I help her be a little less cheap so we can enjoy life while we are alive.
I’m in my early 30s so it’s kind of a pivital point for me but I’ve pretty much taken the stance that I’m not cheaping out on traveling while I am younger.
I don’t over spend on material things but I take multiple trips a year and will continue to do so until I see everything I want.
Will be worse off in the future but it is what it is.
I’m the exact same way. Both my dad and my uncle passed away in their 50s (nothing hereditary, thankfully) and so I’m pretty over the idea of waiting until I’m older for the pay off of all the work I’m putting in now. It’s important to save for longevity of course, but we’ve gotta taken advantage of time when we are young and able to enjoy life!
Nah, they’re deeply in debt. A lot of people feel like they have to play the “keeping up with the Joneses” game to continue to move upward. I hate having to buy a new car before the old one has been driven into the ground. I was raised to buy something, and then keep it running forever. My neighbor leases a new car every 3 years to make sure it’s always in tip-top shape and is the latest and greatest. The funny thing is that they do this stuff in the hope of making more money to pay off the stuff they already have, and the lifestyle creep just keeps that ball of debt rolling.
just so you know consumer debt is an all time high and a lot of people spend money they dont have through loans and credits including credit cards or buy now pay later
Your algorithm only shows you when people spend extravagantly. You didn’t see the post where I made spaghetti and stayed home all weekend. If the algorithms showed you all the boring stuff you would think everyone was very boring.
I don’t have an algorithm… I’m not on any social media except here for sports and video games. I’m talking about actual humans in real life!
Similarly, people rarely will show you their lows. Everyone, most of the time, prefers to only display their mids and highs.
Honestly, I think people are just kind of unhappy and addicted to the dopamine hit of consumption. Discretionary spending is insidious because it creates this temporary feeling of prosperity - e.g., this new car is better than my old one so my life must have improved - while undermining you in the long run.
When people blow money regularly I feel like they’re revealing that they don’t know how to have fun or work out what is amazing in life.
I scrape by on part time work so I can do adventurous things in nature multiple times every week, and have more time and energy for my passions, my wife, our kid and my friends.
The richest people in my life complain to me about things like the temperature of the champagne, not realising that they’re intolerably boring. They keep blowing money and then complaining that the experience left them unfulfilled. You’d think they’d spot the pattern eventually.
You’re not wrong. And “golden handcuffs” are a bitch
I respect him just for the fact that he actually looks at the prices of shit and then calls his financial advisor and asks him if it’s worth it.
That’s the better part though. He wasn’t asking his financial advisor if it was worth it, he saw the prices and knew they weren’t worth it. He called his advisor to see if there was something he was missing/a way to get a better price.
Yeah. It’s NOT about having a financial advisor. It’s about understanding when they suggest.
You also have to consider how OFTEN these guys fly. This isn’t a couple of times a month. These guys are on a plane 3-4 times a week.
That’s a good sign for him not going broke.
Man of the Upper middle class people 🙌
Hali’s working class just like the rest of us. The only difference is how much he gets paid and what he does for a living
Considering he seems reasonably good with money, he’s probably not really working class. He likely owns significant portions of companies and real estate.
Based. I wish more people looked at it like this.
finally an nba multi millionaire player problem i can relate to! so proud of him :D
As an Iowa state alum I couldn’t be prouder to have this guy as an alumni
So I guess 244 Million is 244 million for Hali. Unlike other at least that says x amount isn’t really x amount
He wants to be a heel so badly, but every time I hear Hali talk I just think that he comes off as an incredibly nice, good dude. This was a great interview.
I never got the impression that he wants to be a villain. I just thought fans of opposing teams were hating on him
He’s talked about being a WWE fan a that loves the heel/villain role and wanting to be that for opposing teams. I don’t think he wants to actually be a jerk, but he likes the story and drama of it all and wants to be that guy.
At risk of this coming across weird, I think it’s a sign of being socially aware/having empathy. He understands that fans are there to be entertained and it makes for a good show to have a “villain” to root against, and he revels in having that kind of relationship with opposing fans. Not in a malicious way, just that he gets that part of wanting their team to win is wanting his team to lose, so he might as well have fun and engage in that dynamic himself.
That seems the most reasonable. A lot of people tend to like villains/anti-heros more because they’re “more interesting”.
Nah, he did want to be a villain, but in a completely sport specific manner to the teams he plays in the playoffs. I’m sure the chocking celebration against the Knicks is a prime example of this haha. But he definitely is just talking about being a heel for entertainment value not to actually be a dick or spread and promote hate
That’s the best kind of heel. Trae young vs NY straight to my veins.
That’s what happens to you when you eliminate the Knicks
His peers voted him most overrated, it’s not the fans
That still doesn’t mean that Hali himself is trying to be a heel
He showed up in WWE itself trying to be a heel (and succeeded).
His peers voted him most overrated
I think it’s pretty important to point out that it’s a tiny percentage of his peers who picked him. Only 13 players (out of 450 in the league) voted for him.
If you look at the survey, the other questions had 130-150 responses, while this question only had 90. So more than a third of the players polled just didn’t even answer. A more accurate description would be “13 players don’t like Tyrese Haliburton.” Lol
Then immediately after he went on a nutty run to the final and made them eat their words.
If I had to guess it was basically just the entire Bucks roster voting for him
i mean it’s a superlative not a statistical conclusion
Seemed like a sly way for players to call him an asshole. Why would yall be calling the nice humble guy overrated like this?
There are a lot of current and former NBA players who do not see basketball as anything more than five guys playing 1on1 against each other. When guys like Haliburton or Gobert are given All-NBA spots or awards without scoring 20 PPG, they genuinely cannot understand it and assume the players are overrated.
“I think that I’m a heel by nature. When I’m not in Indiana,” Haliburton stated. “Here, I think I smile a lot, I have fun. People enjoy when I’m here. They cheer me here, but anywhere outside of Indiana, I’m kind of a bad guy. I enjoy it. It’s so much more fun.”
I mean, doing the Reggie Miller choke would have made a LOT of dudes into heels. Hali just seems too good natured, so it doesn’t translate like that.
If you’re in a rivalry with the knicks you’re automatically the heel.
He’s following the Reggie Miller villain arc. Hated because he kills you on the court, but likable off the court, which makes you hate him even more because now he makes you like him on a personal level if you’re a Knicks fan.
This is facts (except I actually hate Reggie Miller on and off the court).
I hate that every clip I see of Haliburton makes me actually think he’s a cool, level headed guy who just happens to play for the corniest corn cob team in the NBA.
Yeah Reggie Miller is annoying af off the court.
he legitimately seems like someone you’d get seated next to on a plane and you’d have an awesome conversation where basketball probably wouldn’t even come up. Probably the most relatable dude in the league.
Well the nicest dudes are always the best heels so it tracks
In the same interview, he talks about being petty, and bookmarking hate tweets on X to serve as motivation. 😂
I know I’m counting on his pettiness to fuel him this upcoming season 🫣
Yeah, he looks like a great guy and a lot of fun.
He fuckin’ embarrassed my team two seasons ago and I’d still go to war for the guy.
He’s just too goddam likeable.
Not a Knicks fan I assume lol.
Haha Thunder fan who felt sick seeing him go down.
Same 😔, hopefully we get a rematch
My first time hearing him speak. Gotta say, both he and the interviewer left me with a good impression. It’s good to see young brothers that know how to carry themselves, don’t constantly drop “N” Bombs, know how to enunciate and don’t have all the neck/face tattoos.
Nothing against the other guys, it’s just that not every young black man has to portray himself as a thug. Note, I used the word portray, cause some brothers were raised in the suburbs, in a great environment but still try to act hard. I find it a little refreshing to see these two brothers in this video.
He goes on to say he does fly private for vacations (domestic) and even to get to the interview 🤣
Like 2-3 months ago he flew my niece on a private jet to his wife’s bachelorette party.
I remember a few months back there was a post in the knicks’ sub with thousands of upvotes where they were like (I’m paraphrasing) “the choke sign he did was him taking credit for Aaron Nesmith getting them back into the game. That revealed something darker about his mind and character” and Hali really just be the most normal dude in the league.
I’ve noticed either Knicks fans like him as a person but hate him as a basketball villain, and then there are people who entirely hate him as a person
I find him pretty endearing but when we lost to him I couldn’t even look at him. My dad hates him and specifically can’t get over the two voices thing for some reason, he just says it irks him. It’s just funny to have all this hate for Haliburton personally, like he’s literally just a guy
it doesn’t help that he plays into it too because he loves the history of the rivalry. I mean, just look at the whole WWE arc he developed with JB 😂 over the last 2 years.
but at the end of the day, its endearing to know the guy also shops on Facebook marketplace and Ebay just like any regular person.
I’ve always had a hard time rooting for another NBA Team, but I might pick up a Hali jersey. Seems like a level headed dude. Also a wrestling need like me. My friends even interacted with him on Wrestling game forums before.
The answer is a lot of people just don’t save, nor even realize that it’s something they should account for. It confuses people who do prioritize putting some money away or investing because they just assume everyone else is doing it, when it’s likely basically every dollar coming in is being spent.
you must be correct, but this legitimately flabbergasts me… the concept of saving money seems so blatantly obvious to me
You’d think so, but 45% of Americans have credit card debt, and our collective savings rate is 3%, that’s less than the average 401k match!! For most people it’s something you do if you have money left over after your take care of your expenses instead of doing it all before, but the problem is your expenses will inevitably increase to match your income because you convince yourself you need more things the more money you have to buy them.
Totally agree that some people fail to budget like that, but tens of millions of people work low-wage jobs (or are disabled), and their basic expenses eat up all their money. When you’re making $26k a year and costs are what they are, saving any extra is a dream.
the average american has no concept of second order thinking. it’s just now now now now now
woah, first financially literate NBA player in a generation?
But does he pay for ad free Spotify?
If I squint, I can kinda sorta see how athletes go broke. Getting handed nine figures at 20-24 years old must legitimately seem like infinite money, especially to someone who may have grown up poor. Overnight you go from scraping by to there being literally nothing you can’t afford.
So yeah, what’s one PJ trip when you have $100M? Well, that’s probably fine. The issue is when you take 50 of them. It takes a long time for bad decisions to compound for rich people. But when it finally becomes a problem it’s very, very difficult to fix.
Either they grew up poor or the NBA is legitimately their first real job because they grew up in a wealthy family and always knew they were making the league. Yeah none of us would do any better getting handed that much money at that age
Lots of poor dudes never had a real job either. They focused 100% on basketball
Really rare for wealthy dudes to go break in a sports league. They come from money so generally their parents have advisors, tax , lawyers all already ready for them. And the best part is their family won’t take their money
There’s no amount of money where you can’t live paycheck to paycheck if you try hard enough. It seems stupid to blow that kind of money, and it is, but it would definitely be easy to do, especially when you’re surrounded by other super rich people making their own questionable decisions.
Just imagine being a 20 year old having that first check hit the account. You spend it all on various things to celebrate, knowing there’s more coming. You do it again the second check because hey, that was fun. Now you’re in the habit and you just keep on doing it until oops, the money stops coming.
If you have 100 million, and spend 15 million a year (not that hard when you are living really large), you will definitely go broke, because your earning is $0 after your career. It does not really take that long for bad decisions to add up when you make a lot of them.
Sounds like someone who might have a healthy relationship with money.
We go into debt, Tyrese. That’s how.
Coach is absurd as 6’6” person.
Also absurd if you’re 6’3” with a top-to-bottom spine fusion and two fake hips.
That’s why he flew exit row.
And this is why all these NBA, NHL, and NFL guys are all broke. Tyrese has a brain and knows that money don’t come easy. Good for him.
Yea I mean you fly private 6 times and spent 100k. You go to Europe and you spend 100k on one flight on a PJ. Like yea. Of all the dumb ways to spend money. Just fly first class lol
Flying first class is not anything like flying private
Doesn’t run 20k either
I mean, he’s not wrong at all. Even if you’re making 244, there’s not a reason for you to ever fly in a private jet when there’s plenty of First Class area on a plane. I think that shit is horrendously wasteful.
The airport when you are that famous must be miserable though
Most major airlines have private areas for VIPs flying the top end of their first class. You don’t go through security or passport control as it’s taken care of by the airline concierge, then you have a private suite where you wait for your flight and then they take you straight to the aircraft with a chauffeured car. You don’t see anyone and no one sees you.
Still have to sit on the plane, remember the Mike Tyson video. Have seen videos of a lot of famous athletes as well.
Yeah, I don’t disagree. I believe there are situations where if you contact the airport/airline they can accommodate you by taking you via the tarmac to your flight and such.
god I love hali
As someone who doesn’t currently earn $244 million, I must ask: how much does flying private actually cost? Are we talking thousands or hundreds of thousands or millions? I know how much coach on South West costs.
I’m not rich so idk for sure but I’ve seen celebs say it’s 100k each way, and I imagine it can get a lot more expensive.
Maybe coast to coast round trip, or overseas. Typically 5-10k per hour
Depends on how many people, length of the flight, and what you need to travel with.
https://jettly.com/charter-cost-estimator
About $3.50…
Who cares if he can or not, that’s not the point. His state of mind is healthy and I’m sure that same thought process keeps him well grounded. He’s also a great example in the locker room. Like the opposite of the old Wall St guys who wanted their subordinates in as much debt as possible.
This is it. The fact he’s aware and consciously thinking about these things will make him more money in the long run than basketball will. I’m sure he’s aware of compound interest haha
Nice to see that he’s still Oshkosh, WI at his core
Too bad everyone up there hates him now. =[
He really brought it on himself though
Haliban flies coach to save money
With his money, I’d take private lessons and be my own pilot after retiring
Being a pilot is not something you can just kinda do as a hobby. You need to be up in the air 5 to 10 hours a month in order to keep up your hours and stay consistent. And this is after you’ve been licensed. It’s a lot of work. My dad is a recreational pilot that has owned 2 or 3 planes in his day (small 4- to 6-seaters).
My dad was a private pilot with his own plane, it was his hobby
He’s frugal. Smart long term.
This make me like him more. And I already like him a lot
I was never a fan of this guy until that playoff run two years ago. Then everytime I hear his interviews he’s just so down to earth. Just a regular dude. Definitely a big fan of Hali
I can confirm this is true. I had a very early morning flight one time after he signed his current contract and saw Hali by himself at the luggage counter. I was barely awake myself and for a second I thought I was dreaming
PJ’S are for BJ’s
the company card, my man.
He literally says he was capping in the second half of the video
A smart dude.
Easy solution is just buy the whole row of seats . That should give you enough leg room!
