Not to mention that the home team lost every game in the WS - even with the Astros banging on their trash cans!
I’m obviously biased but this is my pick. Underdog the whole way, starting galfeat through the season. Elimination game plot armor. Road wins. Comeback in game 7 to win it. As a DC fan who is so used to being hurt the entire city’s narrative was flipped on its head at the last minute every time. Was crazy to experience.
And then…
crickets.
Covid really stole their thunder. It was like they never really got the chance to gloat the way a world series winning team should.

Nationals and the 2011 Cardinals are both teams in recent-ish memory that had an incredible run through the playoffs.
As far as dominance in the playoffs, the White Sox only lost one postseason game
Our bullpen pitched one (1) inning in the ALCS. 4 straight complete games will not be done again until they invent bionic UCLs.
And to a certain extent, the only reason anyone is not answering “the 05 White Sox” is because they made it look so easy, there was never any drama over whether they would win. 11-1 has only been done by them and the 99 Yankees.

They also hit a boat load of homers, but most people (myself included) think of them as a small ball team. Certainly helped having a “true” leadoff hitter that hit literally no home runs in the regular season.

It usually means “I would like baseball to be played in a different way and am trying to frame it as objectively better rather than just my personal preference”
A lot of times, across all sports, those terms get used as a way of giving a backhanded compliment to a team.
It’s basically saying that a team didn’t have any real dominance, but did just enough to squeak out just enough wins.
The bullpen blew the lead games 2 & 3 and White Sox won those games in their final at bats.
They also had a dominant bullpen and great defense. They had enough hitting to win games.
Having 4 very good starters who went 7 innings in all 4 WS games is crazy hard to beat. Probably not the best rotation of this century, but absolutely one of the deepest.
They were not a better than the Angels, we swept them in Chicago right before the playoffs started. I’d we didn’t get screwed by AJ PIERZYSKI and Doug Eddings we go up 2-0 and wrap it up in Anaheim. Out of all these teams the White Sox are probably the weakest WS winner compared to the rest.

The most underdiscussed part of the 05 run was Game 3 lf the WS when Buehrle pounded some beers in the bullpen, sobered up, and got the save in the 14th inning.

Buehrle will always be snubbed by the HoF because he’s such an anomaly. He’s a great pitcher but not in the way that they usually quantify great pitchers for the Hall. I hope on day the veterans comity lets him in

To be fair, people pretty famously forget the 05 world series ever happened. The White Sox missed the playoffs in 04, made no splashy offseason moves, went wire to wire as the best team in the AL, beat a bunch of teams the media liked more in the playoffs, and then missed the playoffs in 06.
Like the reason why people didn’t notice the 4 CGs is because at the same time Pujols was having his famous battle with the Astros and ESPN was basically treating the NLCS as the de facto World Series.
They were gone about as soon as they arrived - one of the bigest freak years in baseball history.
You can remember it as the White Sox being the team sandwiched between Boston’s 2 World Series.

Ironic because despite winning 11 of their 12 postseason games, a lot of those were tense, 1-run games that required timely at-bats to complement the starters and then Bobby Jenks closing out affairs (🕊️). Especially in that World Series against National League Houston; needed clutch hits by Geoff Blum and then Jermaine Dye.
Remember the motto that year for them, Win or Die Tryin’.
No doubt, the entire run was nip and tuck with the Sox always eking it out. An interesting bit of trivia from that season. The Sox 1st game of the season, 1st game after the ASG and the last game of that season all were Sox wins with a score of 1-0.
Doug Eddings and A.J Pierzynski screwed the Angels in game 2.
Technically, the ‘pen only pitched 0.2 innings. Neal Cotts got two outs in the ninth of game 1 of the ALCS.
It’s funny but that’s exactly right. The reason I don’t think about that WS run much was because it was so drama free comparatively.

At the time, the run they went on certainly didn’t feel inevitable. They had a great starting rotation and average hitting.
Even though they swept the World Series, 3 of the 4 games were decided in the 8th inning or later, one in the 14th. Not sure a sweep could feel closer than those 4 games did. Every single game was a nail biter.
Y’alls run was the first baseball games I ever watch. I was mesmerized by your teams pitching as a 7 year old. It made me love pitching and defense more the offense ever since even 21 years later
And so few people note what a massive drought they ended, 88 years is an insanely long time and it’s crazy how much less attention that got than the Red Sox ending 86 years the season before.
That WS was about as close as a sweep could get. Games 2 and 4 had scores of 7-6 and 1-0, and both were decided in the 8th and 9th innings. Game 3 went 14 innings. Only Game 1 was not really close, and it was still 5-3.
They are still the answer to the question though.

I don’t think he clearly caught the ball. The head on view looks like he did, the side view looks like he didn’t. If video review existed back then I don’t think it’s overturned, I think it stands. Catcher just needs to tag the batter on a ball like that, that’s taught in little league.

Joking and my bias aside. As a Yankee fan not sure if you remember, but another point of contention was the final game of the ALDS ran way late due to a rain delay. Angels requested game 1 be set back a day because they got into Chicago so late (like 4am or something). Got denied. Played game 1 in protest.
Juat one of the other little trivia bits I remember that year.
Oh yeah, it was seen as a big missed opportunity for the White Sox losing the opening game with the Angels under such circumstances. Good recall and thanks for pointing that out. The Angels went NY-Anaheim-Chicago to play three games in three days, madness.
(Although, looking at it, the ALCS was scheduled to begin the day after would-be ALDS Game 5’s were scheduled anyway, I forget the reasons why that was the schedule; the Angels’ case was magnified since Game 4 against the Yankees got postponed a day, eliminating the travel day between Games 4 and 5.)

Thanks for recognizing the White Sox. That said, I gotta give the Yankees extra credit for going 11-2 in 1998 and then backing it up by going 11-1 in 1999. That one loss in 1999 was to Pedro (though they got rocked, so a mediocre pitcher might’ve beaten the Yankees, too).

In the defense of the Astros, they got swept, but only out scored by 6 runs in those 4 games. The 14 inning game 3 was a back breaker for Houston.

Admittedly, the only team I have a full understanding of is the Sox. But I do know that as far as post-season runs go, they were as badass as badassery gets. I don’t think there has/had been a collective post season pitching performance like theirs since the invention of the relief pitcher so while my vote may be biased, it’s foundationally sound.

I think dominance isn’t always just winning a game. Sometimes you can string multiple close wins together.
White Sox beat the Astros 4-0 but won 3 one-run games including a 1-0 win and a win in 14 innings. They’re still wins but hardly the mark of dominance.
The margin of victory in 3⁄4 games was razor thin. Even the other game was just a 2 run margin.
Maybe if the Astros had a way of stealing the White Sox’s pitching signs, they might’ve won their first World Series in 2005 instead of 2022.
Fair point. But I think that speaks to the dominance of the pitching staff in that post season. The Sox offense was good but not great. In fact, someone posted their offensive statistics above and by playoff team standards they were pretty pedestrian and hardly playoff-winning numbers. The 1-run wins indicative of a pitching staff that was inpenetrable.
I don’t remember watching them that postseason but that’s pretty incredible. The only other team on that level of dominance was the 2018 Red Sox who only lost 3 games in their run.

I remember watching that series with my grandmother as she rehabbed a broken ankle.
And if I remember right off the top of my head, two of those games were late swings in Chicago’s favor. One was El Duke coming in from the bullpen and absolutely shutting the Red Sox down when they should have had a big inning.
I remember it happening but I don’t remember the games themselves. It was over 20 years ago and I was only able to watch a couple of the games. That’s not that crazy of a statement.
I remember the 2003 and 2004 ALCS much more clearly than the 2004 WS.
I think the Red Sox being a +53 in their 2007 run is a better show of “dominance” than the White Sox record was, even given that the Red Sox lost three games to Cleveland. After Boston was down 3-1 in the ALCS they outscored their opponents 59-15 over the next seven games.

JD Drew made 200 million with one grand slam and intel had told us that if you waited outside the greeen monster all night in line you could get $35 standings room only tickets.
Bought the hat watched JD vindicate an abomination of a contract, and heading to Fenway.
Two bottles, a harmonica keeping us awake all night, liquid blanket failing and having tourist buses take pictures of us wrapped in newspapers, drunken life advice as elder statesmen 20 yo to a group of teens skipping school, bruised shins from dancing in Fenway seats not built for a 6’3 man, a game 7 win.
Life may have peaked at that point, but I’m a hedonist and then decided to use my everyone on Rhode Island knows everyone ID card and get the Brown U head student nurse department to write me a note out of lab (lab time was expensive and you legit couldn’t miss it but again obsessed with the Red Sox and I’m not a doctor now so don’t worry) and did it all again for game 2 against said Rockies team.
Was 5 of the last tickets sold to that game and they only had 20 rows behind home plate.
I was looking in papelbons eye when one of the Rockies big hitters walker or the other guy ripped a single right at his dome.
Picked him off the next batter and the sweep was on.
Everyone loves the 04 Sox but those two 07 games were the loudest that park ever was.

When people talk about momentum or a team being hot, this is what I point to. Rocktober was completely unbeatable, right up until it wasn’t.
It goes to show how baseball postseason is a crapshoot. Just get hot at the right time or outplay the field regardless of roster strength. That’s how an 84 win Diamondbacks team made it to the final round, or an 83 win Cardinals team winning it all after nearly collapsing in the regular season, or a wildcard Nationals team beating 2 juggernaut opponents.
Which is why people saying before this year that the Dodgers were guaranteed to 3 peat are idiots. All you need is for the other team to get hot and win.

They had NINE days off because they won 4-0 while the Red Sox went 4-3 but got to rest a few days to get set for the World Series.
No other team has had to sit that long.
Giants even benefitted from 6 days off for the Tigers in 2012.

That tiebreaker game against the Padres is one of the most memorable non-Sox games I’ve ever watched.
That was the second most memorable post season in my lifetime, after 2002. I was in college and watched every game with a group of friends at the bar. That team was so likeable, and Coors field is a great playoff destination.

An incredibly efficient starting rotation 1-5, a top lineup with both speed and power, and a manager just crazy enough to push the envelope in the right ways. While mathematically this may be the answer, I would counter with my 2015 royals only because that world series came on the heels of a 2014 run where they went undefeated into the world series and lost it in game seven with the tying run 90 feet from the plate. I say the emotional release of being so close, saying “next year ” in the most hurtful of ways, and then following through really beats pure single season dominance.
Also, watching our 1998-2000 outfield of Damon, Beltran, and especially the most underrated of all of them Jermaine Dye each win world series elsewhere is something KC folk always remember. I was genuinely happy for Dye, an absolute stud.
It took about a decade after Dye departed/forced to retire but B Montgomery might be the answer for my Sox in RF

Any team with a rotation of Roger Clements (injury notwithstanding), Andy Petitte, prime Roy Oswalt, (and Brandon Backe giving seven innings of 1 run ball) expects to win at least one game. But the White Sox were just too damn good.
Because of the factors listed, I think nowadays that team is finally getting the flowers it deserves. Plus there’s also the fact of a random White Sox fan spotted in the crowd by the TV broadcast being elected Pope 20 years later.
I felt bad for y’all in that series. I was absolutely pulling for you (and that’s saying something since you had Roger Clemens on the roster). I don’t think you got the credit you deserved for that run. And, yeah, with that rotation, I thought you were going to win it.

I was sad for the Rangers after ‘11. I hated the White Sox for a least a decade after the 05 WS, and rued the name Bobby Jenks (RIP) probably the same way you rued the name David Freese after 2011.
Lincecum was a beast for the Giants with magic in every pitch.
Lincecum was electric in 2010, but Matt Cain gave up zero earned runs in 21 1⁄3 innings that playoffs.

2010 seemed like dream. And then 2012 was just bananas. To be down 2-1 in the NLDS, then down 3-1 in the NLCS, to come back both times? And then sweep the vastly favored Tigers? I still think of Grant Brisbee’s prediction for that series.
And then joking about how we’d miss the playoffs in ‘13 but of course we’d come back and win again in ‘14 (lol yeah right). But to then actually do that? Crazy. On the back of Bumgarner for one of the most epic WS battles. Like down to the wire.
And we were one shitty bullpen away from doing it again in ‘16 until the Cubs upended the space time continuum by killing EYBS.
Like I know that was a while ago now, but I’m still kinda warming my hands over that run.
We were down 0-2 in the NLDS and because of the rules at the time we had to play the next 3 in Cincinnati. Forced a Game 5, Posey hit a GS against Matt Latos. The Reds were the first to lose an NLDS after going up 2-0, Bochy secretly packed champagne, and the rest is history.

In the 10 playoff series (including a 1-game WC) for the Giants in ‘10, ‘12 & ‘14…the Giants were favored in exactly 0 of them.

I won’t get into comparisons because I’m obviously biased, but I think Bumgarner”s career world series stats speak for themselves:
36 innings pitched, 4-0 record, 1 save (in 1 opportunity), and a grand total of 1 run allowed.
1 run in 36 innings. That’s a career 0.25 WS ERA
And “1 save” grossly undersells it. Didn’t he pitch the last 4-5 innings of that game? Came out of the bullpen on 2-days rest and was gonna be the guy to throw the last pitch no matter what the result of that pitch was.
Yamamoto of course was the last 2 innings or so on zero days rest. I’ll be diplomatic and call each of those performances, relative to their rest statuses, a draw. Both were insanely memorable and heroic.

From Game 2 of the ALCS-onward, I was blown away and frequently annoyed at just how many 2-out run scoring hits you guys had. I felt like Jesse screaming with the gasoline jug in my hand, but you guys won games in just about every way imaginable hat postseason and you won 108 games during the season too…all-time great team that backed it up in the playoffs, have to give credit where it’s due.

theres a lot of bitter cubs fans, and a lot of bitter white sox fans. most of those people are just bitter overall..in general I think most of each fan base is just kinda “meh” on each other. its not really a rivalry, its a location thing. there have been heated moments (literal brawls), but in general ive always looked at it like a sibling rivalry. a great example of this is the rain out this year where everyone was dancing in the rain yelling “green bay sucks” … idk maybe its also the type of people you associate with, but my best friend and all of my cousins side of the family are white sox fans. we jab at each and bring up moments pierzcynski punch or pca yelling at the fan moments. but its not like true fan hatred

2016 was pure hell for myself being a White Sox fan. I recall being at a bar, and watching the Cubs beat LA on one tv, and the Bears lost to Green Bay on the tv next to it. Needless to say a lot of my friends and family who are Cub fans were very happy.
I definitely don’t remember all that. Cub fans love to pretend they don’t care about the Sox while hanging up pictures of AJ getting sucker punched in their mancaves. I can assure you no Cub fan I know rooted for the White Sox, just like no Sox fan I know rooted for the Cubs. And baseball fandom was better two decades ago when nobody pretended to be above the location based rivalry between each team.

I think it’s slept on because of how much of a one hit wonder it was this century for them. They’ve made the playoffs 4 times otherwise and haven’t advanced beyond the division series.
What’s crazy is just how strong the ALC was in those days, the fact that in ‘06 we managed to win over 90 games and still somehow miss the playoffs was testament to that.

When the Cubs won in 2016 I was working security at the place where Kerry Wood hosted his championship party. I remembered being in the office and my boss just barging in and scanning the room before pointing at me and saying “You’re the one Sox fan I got on staff at the moment, I can trust you not to be weird about it. Go report to the head of Cubs security, you’ll be with the trophy all night”

Then this absolutely wasted guy comes up, asks for a picture, I’m expecting him to he turned away but then the cubs guy is like “Of course!” He opens the rope as the guy says “I warmed up in the ALCS” after the pic he sees the confused look on my face and again says “I warmed up in the ALCS” “With who?” I ask “The Cubs” “You sail ALCS…” “No I didn’t, see you in Tempe!”
I later find out it was Rob Zastryzny and because of that interaction he is my favorite member of the 2016 Cubs

The Royals won 4-1 in 2015, but nearly every game was exciting. The Mets couldn’t close the games, but it never seemed like a choke-job. The Royals were great at putting the ball in play and moving around the bases.

Both 2014 and 15 were fun for different reasons.
2014 we got possibly the greatest wildcard game ever played, swept all of the competition until the WS, took it to 7 where the Giants needed a generational performance from MB to close the deal. Even losing there, that was a very fun postseason.
I know Alex Gordon would’ve been out by 40 feet, but, dammit, I still wish they sent him in Game 7.
That run the Royals went on was alot of fun.

It sounds crazy because we swept the Angels, but without Ortiz’s walk-off in game three I think we would have been in trouble that series. Vlad’s grand slam in the 7th inning to tie the game was a classic momentum changer, and if the Sox lost that game I genuinely think they would have blown the series. Thank god it never got there.
Yeah, I lived in Boston in 2004, and I remember that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when Vlad tied it. It felt like such a huge momentum shift.
That Ortiz home run was such a relief, and really instilled belief again.
And then came the ALCS, and I can’t tell you a damn thing about what happened in games 1-3, just that the Sox lost.
I vividly remember feeling absolutely hopeless after the ass whooping we got in game 3. Compete embarrassment, to the point we all thought it was bad enough being down 3-0, but to win a game seemed astronomical

Yeah people underrate that team. It was a bit crazy as a bunch of hitters just had career years and pitching got hot at the right time. Then they absolutely tore through the two best teams in the AL, sweeping them before a hard fought series against the Astros. Then they split a hard fought games 1 and 2 before ripping through all 3 home games against the cinderella Dbacks. Went 13-4 overall

In terms of dominance the 05 White Sox. That team was an absolute wagon.
In terms of fun “team of destiny” vibes to watch probably the 15 Royals. Of the 11 postseason wins in that championship run they were tied or trailing in the 7th inning or later in 8 of them. That team was addicted to comeback wins.
That whole 2015 season felt like the entire team had a chip on their shoulder from opening day. I know they talk about it a lot in post-WS interviews, about how they knew they left the tying run on 3rd in game 7 of 2014, and that as a team they resolved to correct the mistake. You could feel it all season.
That comeback win against Houston was just epic.
The Houston win was unreal. I was at work that day unfortunately but listening to the radio. Ryan invoked the late great Fred White and said that it wasn’t over as long as they were outs left. As cheesy as it sounds, I knew the game was ours at that point.

Not most dominant but most intense or “craziest” would have to be the 2011. Go to Youtube and search Best night in MLB.
There’s a couple videos, new and old that show how stupid September 28, 2011 was. First off, beginning in September they were like 10 games out of wildcard and had a sub 1% chance of making the playoffs. That night they snuck in thanks to the Phillies extra innings win against the Braves. The Cards would then go to game 5 against the Phillies in the Division series finale where Chris Carpenter outdueled Roy Halladay in a 1-0 shutout that was one of the craziest pitching duels I’ve ever seen. They beat the Brewers to to go the World Series, then we’ve all heard about game 6 where they were down to their final strike twice before coming back and winning it in game 7.
Yeah, I’m biased. But man that Cardinals teams season was on the line so many times and they just kept pulling through.
Edit: This is probably my personal favorite call in sports. After barely scraping into the playoffs against all odds, after beating Roy Halladay in a 1-0 do or die game, after being down to their last strike to lose the world series not once, but twice, Lance fucking Berkman ties the game up in the 10th. I know Joe Buck gets a lot of hate but I love how he just lets the fans cheer and take it all in.

That’s what always blows my mind when I think about it.
It always makes me laugh when people act like there was no way the Sox would have lost that World Series, because even with the utter joy that came with beating the Yankees, everyone I knew was TERRIFIED of that Cardinals team.
That cardinals roster was so insanely good, but I was watching yall complete the comeback with my cousin and we just looked at each other like “oh my god we’re so fucked”
If the cardinals win game 1 of that series, maybe it goes completely different but I was not surprised at all that we lost

As much as it hurts to say, totally agree. Not only did the 04 Sox come back from the brink they literally had (what it felt like to me) everyone behind them because they could break the curse. Meanwhile the cards won over 100 games that season and it felt like they could win it all but sadly it didn’t go our way.

Having to “come back” from initially getting crapped in ain’t quite a good “run” compared to ‘05 Sox for example who didn’t have to come back from anything. They were unstoppable the whole way through.

The marlins beat the juggernaut of a Yankees team in 2003. After being down 3-1 against the cubs and the famous fan interference when they were 5 outs away from being completely eliminated. They also won the series in the NlDS against the giants on a game winning throw home to pudge. I might be missing a few moments since I was only 2 years old but, I can’t believe it isn’t talked about more. A team who was a wild card, went on to win the World Series twice in their abysmal and joke of a franchise. Im obviously a marlins fan and dead inside.

I’m obviously biased but I agree. If you go back to how close they were to winning it in ‘14 and then to come back and get there again and win it all… It’s a great story and the team was so fun to watch. I love me some small ball
2014 ALCS was the most frustrating sports week of my life. A -6 run differential in a 4 game sweep is just abusive. That bullpen was a fucking buzzsaw.

That Royals team scared the hell out of me going into the WS. We were on such a roll, our offense wasn’t our biggest strength but we had great young pitching. I watched a bit of the Royals in the playoffs and realized how fucking pesky they were. All these modern day analysts would hate that team lol. They were super tough to get out and would single you to death, force things to happen. No real big super stars or big time power hitters, just consistently driving pitchers crazy and getting on base one way or another.

I would say the royals from the wild card game in 14 to winning in 2015 was incredible. The 2015 season by itself, cool, but the run in 2014 coming out of basically nowhere was true magic. Shame bumgarner and panda had to ruin it for everyone, but then the 2015 “fuck the blue jays” series might not have happened

Rangers were absolutely not the best team (possibly the worst, in all honesty) but barely making the wild card and then winning every single road game on the way to the first (and so far, only) World Series ring in our history is goated.
I’m a Dodgers fan but honestly I gotta say the Red Sox as a whole. They hadn’t won a championship since World War I, then finally broke the curse, and went in to win 4 in a 14-year span?? Pretty amazing.

The 2021 Braves were dead. Everything was fucked and they somehow turned it around and had a magical run.
That was a wild regular season of just having an aggressively mediocre record. They didn’t go above a .500 record until August 6. The first 7 times they reached .500, they lost the next game to drop below it. Despite that, they only went 5 games below .500 once and spent the first 4 months and a bit into August just bouncing between .500 and 4 games below.
Then they went crazy in August, took the division, had the lowest regular season record of any playoff team, and stayed hot throughout.
Those 21 Dodgers had just won the 2020 World Series against the Tampa Bay Randy Arozarenas, so we were ready for one player to go nuclear, but there was no way to be ready for the 2021 Eddie Rosario and Friends Ballclub. Rosario literally never got out, and somehow Adam Duvall or Travis d’Arnaud or whoever was always on base for him to drive in!
It was a crazy series that I felt like was going to really start a rivalry between us in the post season but then we started flaming out and you guys too until you took back off after getting Ohtani. Rosario was insane dude, best player in baseball for that week and a half the series went on. The game 2 I really feel like he willed us to win that game when he did his body contortions to slide in followed by Ozzie Albies crashing into will smith to score. Felt like old school baseball
Rosario advanced twice that inning on super risky opportunities that should have gotten him thrown out–but somehow when you’re that red hot, they both worked out and nabbed a critical run. If it doesn’t work you’re an idiot, if it does you’re a hero.
And agreed, I thought we’d be seeing a lot more of each other… We’re on track for an NLDS meetup as things stand.
To add even more story to the lore he hit the cycle in the regular season and apparently before he went up to bat to seal the walkoff with that single he ran back into the locker room to grab his bat that he hit the cycle with and then brought in the winning run.
Also hope we see you guys in the post season again, the rivalry we had from 2019-2021 was really fun.
05 Sox. 19 nationals run was electric. Selfishly the 25 dodgers run (although not dominant) had the greatest series ever to bookend it
