I could be wrong but isn’t the difference that KL was not part of any marketing campaigns, but he was still being paid as if he was? The Daktronics deal was a major flag in that regard because that company has no real need for commercial marketing since they mostly do B2B sales, so why would they need a “brand ambassador”?

The problem is that the money they were paying KL came directly from the Clippers. Daktronics was just a middle man to pay KL outside the cap. If the Clippers never paid anything to Daktronics, they could choose to give their own money KL even if he doesn’t do any actual work for them.

Nah both are illegal. People would know this if they read the report. Teams can’t organize sponsorships for players even if they end up doing actual sponsorship work. That’s why the clippers got fined for the DeAndre Jordan Lexus deal in 2016. Teams are only allowed to pass on contact info for a player/agent if a sponsor specifically initiates a request for it. They can’t arrange or initiate or be involved in any other way than to pass on the contact info.

They will be contenders, they have a good team. The issue will be Leonard’s health, as usual. It’s not more complicated than that, at least to me. Leonard was 7th in MVP voting last season but the Clippers also didn’t make the playoffs. The Raptors aren’t getting 2019 Leonard due to his injury issues - it will depend on Barnes becoming the best player he can be for them to win it all, with Leonard playing second banana.

As for the contract, that player option me no likey. Otherwise the money seems fine for Toronto’s situation. Leonard was fabulous last season, but in your late 30s, the cliff comes at you fast.
