I saw this in the STL sub yesterday. They had one of the worst 3 day agendas with measles a person could have
it was the Cards game, 3 bars and 5 other restaurants and grocery stores in the span of 3 days

Unfortunately, the dipshits (at least the few that will actually read the article) are going to see the fact that the people that were confirmed to have measles were vaccinated as proof that it doesn’t work.
To be clear, approximately 3% of vaccinated people never mount an immune response to measles. So if there are 100 vaccinated people on a train that was exposed to the disease (which is where this spread from originally in STL), you can reasonably expect 3 of them to still get and be able to transmit the disease. Instead of saying this disproves the efficacy of the disease, it actually shows how wildly important it is for everyone to get the vaccine. But good luck convincing the dipshits of that.

Serious answer, if this question is sincere, is that it’s not concerning for most vaxxed people but it is very concerning for immunocompromised people and others who can’t get the vax for various real reasons. Same logic as the Covid vaccine.
It’s 97% effective if you’ve had both doses. So the overwhelming majority of people are going to be fine, but if you’re in that 3% you’re in trouble. Busch Stadium holds 44,000 people, so that’s potentially up to 1300 people that could’ve been infected by this guy.
As a parent of a small child measles is still very concerning. First vaccine isn’t until 1 years old and second isn’t until school age. It’s also an incredibly infectious virus.
For a healthy vaccinated adult it’s not an issue
Children under 12 months can’t be vaccinated. And roughly 8% of vacinnated people can still transmit the virus to others.

Seriously. I had to make the decision today to vaccinate my son early, thus reducing the efficacy of the MMR vaccine against mumps (by 10%), because some jackasses won’t get vaccinated. It’s infuriating, but with 2 exposures in the last two weeks at PHL and CHOP, mumps aren’t the pressing concern (yet).
5 MMR vaccines here. Measles fears me. I do feel bad for the immunocompromised and those too young to be vaccinated, however.
It sucks because there are vulnerable populations that this is going to impact through no fault of their own. I’ve got a 2 month old right now, it is not a fun time to have to also monitor measles outbreaks.

Vaccines are literally a victim of their own success. Most people alive right now have no experience of watching their friends be permanently handicapped from polio or women miscarry because of measles or cough so hard they break their ribs with whooping cough, so they think “oh it won’t be that bad.”
I had to watch my infant brother suffer from whooping cough because of antivaxxers. He was too young to be vaccinated at the time.
Fuck, I can only imagine how awful that was. A friend of mine in college had it, and she was vaxxed so it was a much milder case, but sometimes she’d just cough insanely hard for a minute or more at a time. It was horrifying. Made me go out and reup my TDaP vaccine because fuck that shit.
A friend of mine grew up in Russia and when she had a baby, her and her American husband respected the Russian tradition (I’m taking their word for it) of waiting three months before inviting other people to see the baby- no relatives, well meaning neighbors, etc. Shit like this makes me wonder if people are going to start observing similar customs.
Also, my father-in-law grew up very rural and his dad was fairly old when he was born. Tells the story about overhearing a couple of his aunts saying, “I think this one is going to make it” to the other one when he was around 7-8 years old (would have been around the mid 1950s)

In general, human societies are really bad at remembering preventative measures. Many figured out the cure for scurvy (and how to prevent it) and then forgot it, only to rediscover it years later.
My uncle was nearly blinded by measles when he got it as a child in the 50s pre-vaccine. My grandmother lost a childhood friend to polio. Someone I used to work with died from complications of post-polio syndrome as an elderly man, 70 years after he’d gotten it as a child. It’s all in very recent memory and yet people still don’t believe it.

There ended up being over 5,700 cases and 83 deaths from measles, mostly young children during the outbreak. Babies aren’t vaccinated. Immunocompromised people (which includes folks who have received transplants) can’t get vaccines. Also when the vaccine rate falls below herd immunity, we will have measles spreading regularly in the community, there is a 3% chance that someone who has been vaccinated may have an insufficient immune response to the vaccine and be susceptible to infection.
Measles is the most contagious viral illness in history. Containing it was a huge public health victory.
I understand that but at the same time over 330 million people live in the US and it’s estimated that 92% are vaccinated against measles. You can’t exactly force people to take a shot. Far more people are dying of far worse things in this country that’s 92% immune to even getting infected by measles. So again, why is this a big deal?
