Average is definitely stretching it. Outside of 2023 he’s been definitively worse than average at the plate, low BA on top of no power. Of course it was still a lot better than this lol

He was in kind of a”trust the process” phase early in the year. He had decent statcast numbers similar to his 2023 levels. So IMO some of the reason his production was this poor was due to bad luck.
It’s actually an interesting story, where he had a high A coach that he really liked who seemed to bring out the best in his swing. He went back to work with that coach, and subsequently went on his one good stretch in Pittsburgh, where he hit average. Which sounds like a slight but is genuinely huge for a player like him. The Pirates org found out about this and blacklisted the hitting coach; he no longer works in baseball.

Lol, I know he isn’t HOF level, but to have a batting-capable, speedy 2b with gold glove defense im the 00s-early 10s was not common then.
We had two great players and did nothing with them. Throw in Rolen at 3B for some of that window, Arroyo and Bruce as a SP and RF from the “very good” echelon of players, and man we wasted a good 4 year window from 10-14.

Overall pitching staff losing the ability to throw strikes, walking in over 25 runs with the bases loaded
Regression for all but 5 pitchers on the staff (Burns, Pagan, Tejan Antone (fresh off a 3rd TJ surgery), Brock Burke and a 31 yo rookie making his ML debut in Julian Garcia)
Inability by players at ML level to make adjustments save for Elly, Sal and somewhat Tyler Stevenson (crazy which two/three batters had good years)
Pitching coach out since June while the few adjustments our pitchers have made seem to be off of rehab or demotion stints at AAA
Refusal of the FO at the trade deadline to trade expiring contracts, meaning our minor league system, after a horrendous year and last place finish, are still depleted and ranked worst in the divison
Oh, and to top it all off, we may lose our starting catcher to free agency with no prospects set for 2027 to take over the job (Duno is still a year or so away), no AAA starters expected to be able to step up with Hunter Greene out next year as well and Lodolo a 50⁄50 injury candidate on any given start, and the GM believes he’ll be back next year, which Tito confirmed is his own desire.

Bad talent evaluation and bad coaching is a completely separate issue from a salary cap
It’s still part of the issue of ownership spending. Player development isn’t just coaching. It’s facilities, analytical tools, equipment, nutrition, etc.

Part of the reason the Dodgers attract all those guys isn’t just the contracts, it’s the lifestyle. Their clubhouses and training staffs are world class. It was the first thing Skubal mentioned when he got there, the difference between them and the Tigers when it comes to that stuff.
Anecdotal but when the Yankees do their game belt posts on the road vs at home the difference in the club house is absolutely night and day

I thought Taylor Ward’s whole thing with the O’s was just being a walk merchant, did he just stop doing that? Or did he just become so passive he forgot how to swing a bat? His drop off since coming to Seattle is ridiculous.

So basically we would be better off letting one of our starting pitchers become a 2-way player, because even though they would bat as poorly as Taylor Ward, at least we’d gain some roster flexibility.
