You should have seen the honor guard of umpires throwing their thumbs over their shoulders.
To be fair to Carlos, he was managing an absolutely terrible roster, while Andy was managing a slightly better one that benefited from the stopgap injuries and less pressure. I never really saw Carlos as the “big” problem.
That said, I like Andy a lot and I think this is a very good move. The players know and like him.
Baseball managers donāt impact the game much, theyāre their for clubhouse management mostly and some in game decisions. Mendoza was one of the worst bullpen managers I had the displeasure of watching, and he presided over multiple clubhouse culture issues without doing anything. Ultimately, if the team was better, theyād win more games, but he absolutely was a bottom tier manager. You canāt be bad at both sides of that coin.
You’re right about the bullpen. As for the clubhouse, I’m not sure I’d put that on Carlos or not until we see how next season pans out.
We’ve heard a lot about certain players and the FO refusing to do anything about them, but unsure what’s true, what’s false, and what’s the NY press being the NY press. If it’s all smiles in 2027, you’re probably 100% right.

I know you are being sarcastic but I do think this is going to backfire. Itās a bit different when you are an interim vs having the full time gig. Itās not like they completely turned around, theyāve been around .500 since he was named interim.
In general, keeping interims are a bad idea unless the team had a huge turnaround like Tracy with the Red Sox. Iām not really understanding why the Mets are so happy about this. Theyāll regret this in a year, or two years (if there is no baseball next year).
Rob Thomson worked until it didnāt granted the made the World Series in his interim year.
Ultimately the manager matters quite little in the overall logistics of a team the Mets are just a poorly constructed team with some nice young talent but a lot of poor performing vets

At some point the players have to execute, but the manager still sets the tone. Green seems to have gotten a good response from this group so far.
Sure, but when it’s time to play, it’s on the players. I don’t blame the manager when a pitcher gets shelled in 3 innings or a player has the golden sombrero at the plate. End of the day, they’re just the fall guy if things go sideways.
Fans rarely credit the manager for doing good also. Look at the Dodgers and Yankees. No one gives Roberts credit, because that team is expected to win. Yankees fans hate Boone, but that team is always seen as a favorite.
For us, Mendoza went from beloved to hated in 1 year. How much of an impact does the manager have at the end of the day, I don’t know. But more blame should be put to the players, but you can’t fire the players.

Iām not mad, I like Green. Heās done a great job with the younger core but Iām surprised. He was very adamant all season long about going back to the front office and wanting to spend more time with his kids.
I guess they just finally talked him into it.
The list is exhausting at this point but refusing to fire Mendoza until the season was beyond fucked is arguably the most ridiculous decision made by Stearns this season. If he had fired him in May like a normal POBO/GM would, maybe Green saves our season then, or maybe we watch Green fail to do that and conclude we should look elsewhere. Now weāre putting a lot of stock into a smaller sample size of games managed by Green where there was zero pressure. What a stupid process. Meanwhile the Phillies and Red Sox do it the right way and got rewarded for it.

Cohen has said that he’s not getting fired this year. Stearns’s 5 year contract contract goes through 2028. I think it’s possible they’d move on if they are bad again in 2027 but Cohen has said that he’s going to honor the contract they signed and he still considers it a 5 year agreement.
Part of this is that Cohen doesn’t want to be seen as reactionary and someone who scapegoats management, because that’s going to make it difficult to attract talent. But when the team continues to suck, that also looks like complacency.
I think this is about right.
Stearns gets paid no matter what, and Cohen has already announced he’s making structural changes.
I think the plan is to take away some of Stearns power and keep him in check, without firing him outright. It’s a lot of optics with David on the hot seat. If 2027 is another bust, Cohen may have no problem throwing him to the sharks that comprise the New York Press, though.

Heās been a big breath of fresh air from the managers seat and his postgame conferences are refreshing. Has great rapport with the guys and is very clear about pushing them, his responses on our pitching performances have gotten great reviews.
