He never formally retired, so there’s that.

I’ve been ride or die with this dude since his first cup of coffee in 2005. The 06 team means so much to me, as it helped bring me back to baseball, and my dad and I bonded over it as a bridge of having something to talk about. We used to trade texts about JV bump day. In 2011 I was having a really rough time, and my therapist knew I loved the Tigers. After a few conversations about why and the year he was having, she actually brought him up a couple times, how if he had a bad start, he’d still act like he was fuckin’ bulletproof and take the ball the next time his number was called like nothing happened. I rooted for him after being traded, the Astros subreddit used to post in the pregame “HRC ” as a way to call their shot on a player who would hit a HR. I did a “HRC JV” as a joke his first start there, and honestly it felt cathartic I kept it up for the bulk of his Astros career. I always wanted him to come back to us, and when he did I didn’t care if he was 43, 63, or 83. He came back where was he meant to be.
I know he’s just a guy, but Justin Verlander and his career has meant a lot to me over the years. Seeing him take the mound one last time at Comerica is fucking special. This is what baseball is about.

Man, I’ll never forget the times watching Verlander pitch on TV. My dad would always call me over when the game was starting, and there I was waiting for my favorite player of all time to take the mound. Gonna be a bittersweet Saturday. Hell of a career, glad to see him pitch one last time.

I want to see that game. With Kershaw gone, Verlander is one of the last aces of the older generations (as in innings eater, dominance) that connects to this one, where he just beat you with locations and fooling (he did have a good fastball, but not shooting at 100mph like so many are trying, and risking blowing their arms out).
Funny story, there were two games that he was pitching for the opponents that I had to pass on going to both of them. Of course, both games he no hit us 🤣.
Last year when the Giants were in Toronto, I was about to pass on going to a game due to work things, but then I saw Verlander was pitching, and I rushed my ass to the dome after finishing 🤣
