At the end of last season, I made a post in here about how each team constructed their roster. Since then, there has been a draft, a few dozen trades, and free agency and now we are about to head into training camp for the new season, so I thought I’d update my trade trees in case people are still interested since people seemed to like the last post.

Timberwolves

Doing my own team first because it’s my post and I can do what I want. After this the remaining teams are in alphabetical order by city. The biggest update here is obviously the LaMelo Trade and until I updated this tree I didn’t realize just how much the wolves sent away in that trade. Really going all in on this new core. I am personally very excited for the season even if it’s a big risk, I prefer that to doing nothing.

Hawks

The Hawks have made at least 13 trades in the last 2 calendar years. Crazy amount of activity.

Dee Brown Trade Tree

The Jaylen Brown Trade extended one of the longest trade trees by generation of any team in the league that starts back in 1990 with the drafting of Dee Brown in the 1st round. The tree now includes Paul George, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Kyrie Irving, Desmond Bane (as a draft pick), Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and dozens of other players. I have included a special version of just the Dee Brown tree that includes all dead branches, but fair warning, I have not double checked all the branches and there is very likely mistakes since I was doing this as more of a curiosity and was not nearly as rigorous as I was on the main trees for fact checking.

Nets

The Nets have an insane amount of draft capital and some tradable contracts and I would not be surprised at all if they go big game hunting this year. They also have 11 guys with 1 or 0 years of experience in the NBA. Drake Powell is in the upper half of the roster when ranked by total career games played. Very weird roster.

Hornets

The Hornets have one of the 3 largest war chests when it comes to the number of draft picks in the league (along with the Nets and Thunder) and while I know a lot of fans are upset at the LaMelo trade, they are kind of sneakily well positioned to pivot into a new era if they can steer the ship well over the next 3 years. Unfortunately that may come at the expense of mediocre rosters until they make a big move or get lucky in the lottery.

Bulls

The Bulls are sort of left out when people talk about the LaMelo trade but they essentially got Nic Claxton for free. I don’t think it’s a huge upgrade but I really liked Caleb Williams in Summer League and do want this team to be good. (Also, I miss Leonard Miller being on the Wolves).

Cavaliers

This trade tree contains the oldest trade still providing a team value. On June 17, 1986 the Cavs traded a future 2nd for the draft rights to a guy by the name of Mark Price (pretty good value if you ask me). Also kind of cool that Tyrese Proctor is the only guy who is on his team because of a trade involving Lebron James because his move to the Heat was actually a sign and trade. The biggest change from last year is the Peyton Watson acquisition.

Mavericks

The Luka Trade sadly still looms large in this trade tree. At least now you have 6 guys on the roster as a result of the trade instead of just 1 or 2. I really wanted the Timberwolves to draft Sergio De Larrea so I will be watching Mavs games this year hoping he doesn’t prove me right.

Nuggets

The Peyton Watson Sign and Trade really didn’t bring back any assets. The only guy they got back was Julian Reese who they very quickly waived. I do occasionally look at the nuggets as the ghost of christmas future for the Wolves if the LaMelo trade doesn’t work out.

Pistons

Roster Tree without Duren

For now I am keeping Jalen Duren on this tree because I am tired of waiting for that situation to resolve and want to get these out before training camp starts. I’m sure Pistons fans also want the contract saga to be over. I have included a trade tree without Duren in case he leaves and goes somewhere else in free agency.

Warriors

Outside of Mark Jackson and Jason Richardson, the oldest draft pick providing the Warriors value isn’t one used in a trade tree but instead is Steph Curry. Longest Tenured single team guy in the league.

Paul George is now prominently featured in the Clippers, Thunder, 76ers, and Pacers Trees. The butterfly effect he has on those teams is enormous.

I know a lot of people say the Kawhi punishment is a death sentence but if the Raptors are bad after Kawhi retires or leaves, they honestly could escape with way less of a scar than most people assume. Now if the Raptors are good, yeah the clippers are going to have a ton of issues being competitive, but somehow even with all the chaos they are still the team with the longest active streak of winning seasons. Also, I had no idea Elgin Baylor was the GM of the Clippers until doing this chart. He won Executive of the year in 2006, which also blew my mind considering the reputation of the team.

Lakers

Lakers had an insane amount of turnover this offseason. They also have 6 guys on their roster at the moment that were undrafted and have only played for the lakers. Still very cool that 3 trades done by Jerry West are still proving the Lakers value to this day.

They still 6 Vancouver picks providing value! Also, no matter what source I look up, I cannot figure out what two second round picks the Pelicans sent them in the Jordan Hawkins/Micah Peavy trade earlier this month.

Another one of the older trade trees, going all the way back to 1992, however the biggest news is the beginning of the Giannis and Bobby Portis trade tree. This will likely still be alive for a minimum of 10 years and I’m excited to see the butterfly effects from it.

Pelicans

Still one of the harder trees to organize, the Pelicans love making trades involving a large number of players only to make multiple smaller trades involving players from multiple big packages. They still have 2 picks from the “New Orleans Hornets” days providing value (Anthony Davis and Nerlens Noel). Also, I cannot figure out what 2nd round picks they sent out in the September 8, 2026 trade with the Grizzlies, so those are just listed as “Unspecified” for now.

Knicks

The Now Dead Pat Riley Trade Tree

The Reigning Champs! The biggest loss of this season from a historical perspective was Mitchell Robinson who was the last player or draft pick remaining from the historic Pat Riley Trade tree that began in 1995 when the Knicks traded their head coach to Miami for a 1996 1st round pick. In honor of that tree, I have included a special trade tree broken up by year showing every single player and draft pick that the Pat Riley Tree had a hand in touching. It’s a little different from the normal trees since I wanted to show how long players remained with the team and also had to figure out how to show branches dying out.

Thunder

The Jared McCain Trade is so much more complex than anyone remembers and until the 2027 draft will remain that way (since it is the best of four 2nd round picks, and I have to account for how the Thunder acquired all 4). Also, every time I look at the Thunder Draft Stash I get jealous as a Timberwolves fan. Sam Presti is still the best GM in the game in my opinion.

Magic

Noah Penda, Franz Wagner, and Wendell Carter Jr are the final remaining pieces of the Dwight Howard Trade and the only thing keeping any trade made before 2021 alive for the Magic.

Aesthetically, this is one of my favorite trees because it is as wide as it is tall. It contains a few huge trades and goes all the way back to Steve Nash. Unfortunately, a lot of those trades have not panned out well for the Suns, but at least it looks cool.

FAQ:

This trade doesn’t show every team that was involved

The trades are presented from the perspective of the team being shown. For example, in the Kevin Durant trade to the Rockets, there were 7 teams involved, but not every team sent a pick or a player to every other team. So from the perspective of the Rockets, the only teams that sent them anything are the hawks and suns, so they are the only teams shown.

I don’t see X trade that I know this team made

These trade trees do not cover every transaction by a team, but instead only the draft picks/free agent signings/trades that are still providing the team value. I also elected not to show how the teams acquired each of their future picks because it was complicated enough already and instead I decided to just show which draft picks the team has in the “Future draft picks” Box

Why are the images hosted on imgur instead of this being a photo post? They seem too low resolution

The nba subreddit doesn’t allow album posts so this is the easiest way I know to upload these images. They should hopefully be able to be viewed in full resolution if you open them in a new tab.
