Prime Klay is super underrated in a conversation like this. Legit all defensive team versatile big guard, constant movement with his gravity, but with super low usage as he doesn’t need the ball, can still drop 60. Could literally drop him on any team in history in any era and they would improve

People won’t pick him because they dislike him but it’s absolutely Kevin Durant

David Robinson. One of the most athletic players in NBA history, tall but super fast, highly skilled, GOAT-level defender, could bang down low with anyone but then had a finesse game too.

Anthony Davis. He’s the perfect pick and roll / lob partner for ball dominant superstars and is an all-time great defensive player.

I always feel like Bron is the easiest answer to this since he does so many different things well and in his prime could play both ways 1-5.

I really don’t understand how anyone can say Kevin Durant when the only rings he has came from a Warriors team that was so malleable they successfully molded around him, not the other way around. he’s got the size, shooting, playmaking, and defensive ability that would make him “portable” but his teams have only been disappointing since he left the Bay, and it’s pretty obvious that he’s not pulling locker rooms together (to put it mildly). he might be the most gifted player of all time, and one of the most dedicated to his craft. but the track record isn’t what it is by coincidence. his star teammates, Kyrie, Harden, Booker, have all demonstrated they can share the court with other stars pretty successfully. even Russ has had some success with Paul George and high-volume Brad Beal. Durant just isn’t the answer here.

Just on court fit or we thinking more holistically including locker room impact? And are we assuming they’ll buy in to the system in place? Durant could be the clear number one depending on those answers. I do think bird is a great answer regardless.

For Steph, he’s a great offensive impact but a team has to plan for him defensively - no hate and he’s not a BAD defender, just his size limits him in some matchups.

I think players like Bird, Durant, Duncan are the best answers in terms of thriving on or off ball, giving some spacing , and providing plus defense.

Honestly I think a player having the ability to shoot and defend as a baseline is what makes them truly portable. So a player like LeBro is perfect in everything except shooting. As much as it pains me to say it, a player like Kawhi or KD is more portable. KG if we are making some adjustments for era (he loved that long step back two). And bird. Theoretically MJ as well although I feel like he’s going to take over whatever team he’s own and somewhat defeat the idea of being portable.

I feel like you could put any superstar (in their prime) on any team and they’d make the team better as long as the rest of the team around them stays the same. They’re superstars for a reason, they’d adapt their game.

HOW MUCH they’d improve their team is another conversation. Like I think adding prime Carmelo would improve any team but not nearly as much as adding KD would.

Leaving out bron is an insane oversight. Guy is the only person in history to play all 5 positions has adapted through different eras of basketball and we’ve already seen him succeed with a variety of talent.

When it comes to personality: Tim Duncan.

Timmy won chips in three different eras with three different styles of team construction. In the first, he was second fiddle to David Robinson, in the second he was the tip of the spear on both offense and defense, and in the third he was a gracefully aging superstar who allowed others to ascend. The man has zero ego and just wants to win, regardless of how many offensive touches he gets.

On court fit could potentially be more challenging. Prime Duncan would be a killer in the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s but I struggle to imagine him playing in 2026 where offenses are playing 5 out. It feels like he left the league at the perfect time.

It would however be fascinating to see a prime Duncan on court with a player who is ball-dominant but a willing passer like Luka or LeBron. Could he run a double big lineup with Jokic? How would he fit into a system with Steph/Klay/Draymond? What would the 90’s bulls look like with Timmy instead of Scottie?

When I think portable I think of four things; they don’t clog up the lane, they play defense, they pass well, and they don’t need the ball in their hands or the offense to be built for them to he useful. Finally, less important but relevant is whether they can play multiple positions.

Back in the 60’s, Russell was a super elite defender, great passer, didn’t need the ball. That’s three out of four. Wilt did something similar when he was old. There are no truly portable bigs from before the three point line, but Russell is the closest and Wilt runner up.

That said, the big portable superstar from the early days is definitely Jerry West. He was good shooter for the time, fantastic passer, and fantastic defender. He could defend the two and with his length probably would survive getting switched onto threes in the modern game. The other relevant guard is Walt Frazier, for similar reasons. Great mid range shot, could dump the ball off and relocate to the open court when the defense collapsed on his bigs.

The seventies is a weaker period, but we can definitely give a nod to Walton, who was a great passer, and Havlicek, who could play multiple positions, was an elite wing defender, became a great passer later in his career, and was a sniper from the mid range.

In the eighties, Michael Jordan is portable. He’s the best defender to ever be a primary SG, great from the mid range, can play off ball(was a great cutter on some of those bad Bulls teams early on) or abuse any good matchup… Just no weaknesses in his game for his era, and actually his defense is extra portable because he’s a gambler who takes risks; this works better with other good defenders.

Bird and all the modern guys are really obvious, but I wanted to bring up some of the earlier players from before the three point revolution who probably could have extended their range(and Russell and Wilt because being top five defenders ever and great passing bigs and not needing to slow down the offense to get touches is super portable).

It’s Magic. He’s a plug and play guy and can play with anyone. Steph off ball is amazing but the entire offense is set up to screen for him to help get him open.

Either a rim protector that can shoot or a wing that can handle.

It’s Duncan. We saw him win in 99 as the young guy on an older veteran team with 2 towers. Win in 2003 as the absolute man on offense and defense surrounded by guy who were either too old or too young. Win in 2005 and 2007 as part of a three headed monster who was able to pick his spots on when to dominate and when to let his star teammates shine. Win in 2014 as the old grizzled vet who can’t dominate the same way anymore but still hold his own and rise to the occasion when needed. Duncan could adapt his game to whatever the team needed and it was always clear that winning mattered more than anything else - not stats, not fame, not credit, not accolades. And he did all this while always being a fantastic teammate and the most coachable player on the court. Tim is the biggest reason that the spurs always won more than 50 games, always made the playoffs, and 80% of the time made it to the second round (at minimum) every season of his career.

I’m gonna get some flack for this but I’m going to say Jason Kidd. I feel like the floor for every team he’s been has been semi conference finals or better, even though he’s not the best shooter. Everything else he brings to a team is undeniable.

Robert Horry can fit into any system old or new.

Ray Allen. Dude was an excellent number one option who was a series away from a finals appearance. A champion as a third option. A champion as a fifth option.

Player ego has to be taken into effect and he can minimize his role and not fuck up chemistry.

For all intents and purposes the best players are the most portable ones since they improve a team the most

I feel like Kevin Durant is the most perfect answer to this question.

Silent deadly scorer that doesn’t monopolize the ball, works in any system, but will drop 25-30 on 50/40/90 and somehow the other stars on the team still have the exact same numbers as they did before he got there.

Never been a bad fit with another star, and he’s played with all types of stars except a dominant big (which he’d work very well with, for the record).

I feel like people are kind of missing the point of this thread.

LeBron is an amazing player who will make any team better, especially in his prime.

LeBron is not a plug-and-play guy. He runs the offense a certain way, expects his teammates to play a certain way, and is half a coach too.

There are two types of players that I think fit best here.

Guys who can make their own shot and don’t need a system to do it, just the ball. Harden and KD are probably the two best modern examples (in their prime). They can drop 30 and don’t need someone passing them the ball to do it. Sure, defense is gonna suffer, but they are walking buckets.

The second is defensive minded shooters. On offense, they stand around the perimeter and hit 3s. Every team needs guys who can do that. On defense, they lock a guy down. Every team needs that. Klay, Paul George, really any guy who has that in their kit would work assuming they aren’t ball dominant.

I think that people underestimate how much practice and chemistry goes into playing with a guy like Steph or LeBron.

I’ve played with some guys who played a bit of college ball, which at our pickup level was like watching LeBron. Unless they just decided to do it all themselves, they were hard to play with. They expected a guy to be where they weren’t, made passes we weren’t expecting, and in general just played faster and better than us. Give it enough time and it would work, but them just scoring on their own worked much better as a “plug and play” guy.
