Oldheads won’t like it because he doesn’t have the volume (only pitched one full season before turning 28) but … Is he a hall of famer?
He’s arguably the best pitcher of the 2020s and I could easily find several pitchers in the hall that he surpasses in terms of ERA+, WAR, FIP, WHIP, Strikeouts, WAA, WPA, playoff stats. I could go on.
It’s just the innings pitched number that will be held against him, even if other volume stats are fine.
I think as of today, no, but he also has gas left in the tank. He had a significant down period this season after a dominant start, but has turned it back around and has been dominant again.
Let’s see where he lands in 2 years
Well he has a 151 ERA+ this year and will get between 4 and 6 WAR too. That being a down year gives me HOF vibes.
Barely a down year, which is nuts considering how bad that stretch was. He was just elite outside of that stretch.

Johan Santana didn’t even get the minimum 5% required to stay on the ballot after year 1.
Wheeler has been a worse pitcher than Santana in nearly every way.
Great pitcher but he would need to pitch another 3-4 elite seasons to make a case for the HOF.
yeah but eventually voters will need to adjust their criteria for starters or else there’s just never going to be pitchers making it into the HoF after Scherzer. Idk if he’ll make it in but I wouldn’t be surprised if Wheeler fares substantially better than Santana
Yeah I think that’s probably true (that he fares better) but never winning a Cy Young and “only” finishing in the top 5 of voting twice (so far) just isn’t gonna do it
But I feel it is at least a normal opinion that Santana was snubbed and would probably stick around or get in if he was on the ballot today. Hell look at how well Felix has done.
Also Wheeler has a much better playoff resume, reached 2000 Ks, and the WAR difference is pretty much negligible.
