It doesn’t mean nearly as much back before the rule changes. It cannot be understated just how much easier it is for players to steal bases now because of the rule changes. I mean, you give Ricky Henderson only two pick off attempts at him along with a pitch clock that a pitcher has to adere to? He’s stealing fucking 200 bases a year lol. It’s kind of a joke honestly.

So you want to argue that it ISN’T easier to steal bases? More players aren’t stealing because teams don’t see the value in the risk, on multiple fronts. But the year the rules went into effect it was the single highest stolen base success rate in MLB history.

That’s a pretty disingenuous argument, there’s only been 6 people in baseball history to do a 40-40 season. Whether you agree with their full statement or not, the new rule changes definitely make stealing bases easier which is half of what’s needed to join the club. It’s still obviously incredibly hard, but I won’t deny someone saying the rarity is lessened by the new rules.

Last I checked (a month ago) he throws fastballs only 39% of the time with the rest being off-speed or breaking pitches. I’d consider under 50% fastball usage to be a junk pitcher so it’s perfect

It is really fucking hard to hit a major league pitch. It’s even harder when you’re trying to hit it to a specific location. It’s even harder when that specific location is your push side.

If you think MLB players dont have an approach at the plate, as well as the ability to adjust said approach, then idk what to tell you.
It is 100% a thing and players literally talk about it.
Cubs are a home run hitting team. They almost always try to clobber the ball and hit it into the seats and tonight that’s not gonna happen. Very few of our guys ever change approach when the situation calls for it and it’s infuriating to watch at times.
Everyone says this and acts like the single most analyzed and optimized sport in existence is leaving runs on the table out of some stubborn sense of pride or something.
I promise you, if these guys had the ability to reliably adjust their approach to fit the base state or the weather or the shift or whatever, they would. Pitchers are just straight up too good. It isn’t possible for 99% of the league, and I only say 99% because I can’t prove it‘s 100%.

I refuse to believe that hitting a baseball is so much more uniquely difficult compared to literally any other major sport with a ball to the point where “aim lower” is impossible

Man, Cubs fans must be so excited to have this dude. I don’t think people truly realize how special this season is just yet. It seems like Crow-Armstrong winning MVP due to Shohei’s injury is still a common sentiment, but make no mistake, this performance would have competed for and likely won the award in each of the past 2 seasons. 40 HR/40 SB while being arguably the best defender in baseball is absurd. I know that 54⁄59 in 2024 was incredible, but you can’t compare the best CF in baseball with what was essentially a DH, and I say that as an Ohtani fan (he’s my favorite player).
How am I just learning there’s a dude named Janson Junk in the pros?
